Subject: Seen that game before

We start ok, seem on top, get a goal even. Jimenez fantastic in the first half. Berge travelling forwards with the ball very well. But we can't put a team to bed. Wilson, Iwobi especially wasteful today, too hesitant, poor shots or final passes or poor decision making.

So despite having had barely any pressure put on us we are vulnerable to something random happening like the deflection.

Then second half we are nervous and revert to the even more cautious, slow, ponderous buildup. The two exceptions were our shots - some rare one-touch passing leading to the save from Sess, and then Wilson running in behind - something you seldom see in this Silva set up. On the whole I thought we were getting worse and worse, players taking the most conservative option and all our attacks seemed to taking place with Everton set, ten men behind the ball.

Then when Everton start to foray forward - panic. I guess there's enough evidence now to say we have a serious issue defending set pieces and are seeing a serious decline in Leno. ESR was classy and did very well for the goal but what's up - is he going to be a 60-70 minute player for ever?

Games like today and suddenly the prospect of Silva leaving in the summer doesn't feel so awful.

Did have two decent chances at 1-1, sess shot & Wilson lob both saved by Pickford. But we are too slow, too predictable in how we attack, can't keep clean sheets. A lot can happen between now and August but honestly can't see Man U, Spurs, Everton being as poor next season and the teams coming up could make a go of it, so potentially we could find ourselves in a battle with the 3 coming up, plus wolves, west ham. Excellent write up. At times this season our deficits come across as more psychological than tactical. Its odd. First season up we played with such fire and we rarely fail to bring it against the big clubs. Would add that the game showed yet again our fallibility from set pieces (throws and corners today) and was a bit of a microcosm of what I wrote about Leno below. Pity the seasons over like this. - Re: psychological I wonder whether there's simply a kind of stagnancy that sets in when a manager has been in charge for four years, especially in this era of super-drilled, structured, disciplined football which takes a lot of the spontaneity out of things.   - What's interesting here is that it mirrors management in general, not just football. Certain military and corporate structures have up-or-out policies in part as a recognition that management stagnates. There's something about the interplay with old and new management structures that create a dynamic that's hard to keep up over long periods. In football some like Ferguson have bucked the trend by bringing in and delegating to innovative assistants. But otherwise it's hard to keep momentum. Re: Seen that game before. Yes good summary thought Pickford made two outstanding g sa es from Wilson. First half well on top but gave a sloppy goal away. Leno awful error for the third goal after. 2 issues, we are so predictable, so if we know whats gonna happen, oppo analysts sure will, try and over load our left, get ball to Anderson, try long pass, get crosses in, we’ve done same all season, where’s the evolution, the coaching? Set pieces is also a shambles given the size of our team, again where’s the coaching? Another issue with transfer policy is these expirienged prem players will all be on big wages, can’t move them on even if we want to refresh (nobody is taking Leno). I’d like to see AP, diop (too much wages for bench), cast, tete, Leno, reed, Cairney all moved on, we’d be lucky to get 20/25m for the lot.   - I like diop, we should never have signed Anderson for so much money while we had him, but we can’t have someone on 70k a week (reported) often not even in the squad. Leno again is a cost thing, commit so much to someone’s wages tbsy need to be offer more, nobody will take Leno though due his wages. Tete or cast need to go, both solid, but Tete is injured a lot and neither is good enough if we want to aim higher. - I said after last summer transfer window, and again in January, that failure to sign a striker was going to cost us. Raul and Muniz were me er going to be the answer.
