Maybe it was just for the readers to have something to relate to the earlier books, that there was hope that those beloved characters could come back in some way to help in the struggle. Perhaps Frank knew deep down that he wouldn't get to Dune 7 and threw in this bit about the vial to leave an end of some sort.

I, for one, think it has some meaning and will play a role in Dune 7. I think it would be pretty cool if one of the earlier characters comes back as a ghola and then regains his/her memories. But, even if this doesn't happen, the validity and value of this vial are still very real. The Tleilaxu would definatly want genetic samples from any number of people, especially from the ones he's carrying. One could imagine many uses the Tleilaxu could find for the contents of this vial. Also, by mentioning the vial, Frank let's us in on some plan that was hidden, yet one that we as readers would have wondered about anyway. I mean, if Duncan can come back, why not Paul or Leto?

Also, the vial might not play a part in Dune 7, but who knows how far down the line it could be for the contents to find their use. Thousands of years...millions maybe? It's fun to think about....that's for sure.
