Honestly, the machine thing really seems to fit, not just with all the clues given but with how dangerous the hidden enmy needs to be. I couldn't think of anything more boring that Supercharged Human Face dancers...it needs to be something special.

Now granted, machines are a little overdone. I mean so many scifi books/movies utilize them as the enemy:

Star Trek: The Borg
Matrix
Terminator

As we get closer to perfecting AI in real life (we aren't that far away actually) it is a very real fear. I am hoping that it won't be machines like Omnious in the Preludes because frankly I thought Omnious was a pretty stupid machine and had many many weaknesses, but I hope it's not just special face dancers like so many folks here have wanted.

Do you have a better solution?
What else could it be? Aliens maybe? I think it's a little odd that the only other alien life form even encountered in Dune is Sandworms. Could there be something else? Maybe, but it doesn't seem to fit.

I'd like to see some other really plausible theories.
Really, I would.
