What do you mean fictional characters aren't enough?? It think it is goofy to believe that if we created a fully sentient robotic organism with human cognitive abilities that they would still not be "human" because we have some undefineable factor that makes us special. My point is though that we don't know what machines will be capable of and it is certainly in the realm of possibility that Machines will have some sort of appreciation of deeper meaning in life than just is what's on the surface. Right now, you are correct, but in the future, we just don't know.

The Harkonnens brutalized the Fremen not just because they found them disdainful. They brutalized them as a means of subjugation to harness them as a resource. Like your example of slavery, the Harkonnens wanted slave labor to mine the Spice. They were a valueable resource that needed to be exploited. The Baron did not want to exterminate the Fremen, he wanted to utilize them as Spice miners and eventually for an army for Feyd Rautha that would challenge the Sardaukar.

Hitler, wanted power. His invasion of other countries was again for land. Hitler, was insane. His slaughter of the jews, however, does not constitute war...it constitutes genocide. There is a difference between killing and war.

There will always be war so long as there is a space that two entities want but can't share for whatever reason. This is why even if there is all the space in the universe, there will probably be war because some spaces are more desireable than others and will be fought over.
