I think the young Muskies were humbled from the shootout. UC played tough D with offensive contributions from Stokes early, and IMac crashed the boards and kept the ball alive nicely. Great team play. UC took XU out of their original offensive plan early, and executed on the offensive end, and Chalmers did his best to get Xavier to the half. Then the worst nightmare that no one expected, West goes down. Who was to step up? UC played team ball on both ends and had an 'will not lose' attitude. UC defined what a solid game was.

Since that game X has won 10 straight, and West has only been the leading scorer twice while Sato and Chalmers have stepped up big with points, assists, and defense. Frey has lead the scoring twice, Dave Young has come up big offensively at times. Keith Jackson has given X big minutes, especially guarding power fowards in the 4 guard line-up. JWill and AB have hit some big shots. West will not be asked to completely carry this team, and teams are paying for the double-triple-quadruple coverage they put on him. He is almost a decoy in the first half. So I think it is fair to say that the UC game was a turning point. I have no guage on if they are preparing harder or not, but I think they saw where they had to get to. Purdue was just a woeful game. Missouri was early and a hot Rush was the difference. Same schedule now? For their record:

This is my rant on the A-10, which is officially having a terrible season. The A-10 does not suck, and is actually surprisingly better than many think. The problem is that with the exception of Xavier (at the moment) the league is filled with teams that are typically good enough to finish second or third in the their respective divisions. Now there are 6 or 7 teams shooting for those spots without any major powers. The result is a 3+ bid league probably getting 2, 1 if Dayton melts down and if SJU doesn't snap out of it. GW and SBU built solid OOC resumes, and have since been derailed by teams that were suppose to be NCAA threats.

The offenders: SJU and UMass. SJU had a 14-2 conference record last year, won a ton of close games, and start 4 fifth year seniors with Jameer Nelson. They have yet to show up or play defense. No excuse for anything less than a 9-3 OOC, and they easily could have been 11-1. The 'Nova loss is embarrising. I think Dayton is a better team, but you won't know it b/c they aren't as good as Xavier have have played them twice. UMass has beaten Oregon and NC State, while losing to Holy Cross(?), have a very tough frontcourt and a capable backcourt in Crooks and Anderson. Still at 16 SOS and a 60 RPI... No one expected GW and Richmond to make a run at a title. And I will cut Temple some slack. Temple has been to two elite 8 in three years and has held the conference flag for the last 5 year. Chaney and his Owls can have a bad year, and if we listened to Chaney, we would have known they were very good.

Sorry for my end rant BC. Great question though. Just my opinion... Oh, I agree on Matta. He may not be as bench seasoned as Skip is/was, and time will tell, but I think a lot of the mid season development is Matta and staff.

FYI- last 3 Xavier coaches first 18 games (different leagues, and not may similarities however).

Gillen - 15-3
Prosser - 15-3
Matta - 15-3
