I have been going crazy trying to remember the name of the store that once resided where Toy's R Us is , I can almost remember the store as a varity store like Star Value and L.H Martins,Kennys . I think it was painted green on the outside and had a metal coregated roof there was a pickup area in the back and the parking lot wasn't lit very well. Hi.....we had a bunch of us kids living on 79 st, stevie acardi...glen taus, his cousin jeffrey, the goldman brothers, the utility men....and many others.......we played a lot of stick ball, street hockey, and stratomatic baseball. Tops in the street and scully were also played all the time.......any body out there? lets talk about those days........I moved away in 72, I think, to long island........

Holly passed away from breast cancer April 18, 2008. her mom was Diane Richards who owned the dance studio in canarsie. she moved to Orlando around 1972. she was a dear friend of mine. we had a great history together. she was one of a kind. so full of life, always laughing. to know her is to love her. my heart is broken and i miss her dearly. my condolences to her family. her mom Diane, sister Donna her other sister and brother.whose names escape me. I'd like to get some serious opinions & feedback here in regards to what YOU personally believe the reasons were that Canarsie changed so quickly, and what were the causes.
My personal opinion is as follows:
The presence of the Breuklyn Projects was a huge monkey wrench that the city of NY placed in Canarsie in the 1960's. This then led to everyone north of Ave J, between Rkwy Pkwy & East 108th Street running for their lives in the 1980's when the real estate offices like Fillmore & Price illegally blockbusted the neighborhood, telling everyone via phone calls that the "blacks" were moving in, to hurry up and sell before it's too late. I was there. I got the phone calls.
I blame the real estate greedy bastards for what happened to Canarsie, who used fear & manipulation to force people to sell.

I PLAYED BASS GUITAR IN THE BAND CHAMPAGNE.WE PLAYED THERE FROM 80-TO 85 WHEN IT CLOSED.OUR LEAD SINGER WAS DONNY FROM AVE M NEAR GRABSTEINS.WE HAD 2 GIRLS INT THE BAND.ONE OF THE GIRLS WAS CARMELA FROM 93RD AND SEAWVIEW.WE HAD A GREAT TIME-SO MUCH FUN AND MEMORIES.WE ALSO PLAYED AT THE KENNEDY INN NEAR OFF THE BELT PKWY IN QNEENS FROM 82 TO 91.WE DID TOP 40S DANCE MUSIC AND ALSO A CRAZY SHOW WITH DIFFERENT CHARACTERS SUCH AS ELVIS, MAE WEST, WILLIE NELSON,THE VILLAGE PEOPLE,ETC.I LIVE IN LAS VEGAS FOR THE LAST 6 YRS.IF YOU REMEMBER EMAIL ME.WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE WHO USEF TO HANG THERE.

Anyone remember a speech teacher Miss Rich from wilson 211 . What she got away with back in the early 70s would have landed her in jail now. When i was 13 in 1971 she kept coming on to me and i stopped going to her class . She came up to my homeroom and screamed at me telling me i better come back to the speech class in the future. Gorgeous woman but what a whacko.I assume she must be close to 60 now

I lived in Canarsie from 1964 until I moved to Long Island in 1981. My kids went to Our Lady of Miracles, There has to be more people than this that lived in Canarsie. When I was a kid I lived in Red Hook if you want to see a great web site log onto "South Brooklyn Network" & go to the guest book. People that lived & still live in Red Hook communicate with each other every day. It brings back alot of GREAT MEMORIES. I hope this site improves.
