Subject: Giles and Season 6

My understanding is that Anthony Stewart Head decided rather abruptly to leave the show after Season 6 had already gone into production, and that Joss Whedon had to improvise a new plot line to account for the absence of Giles for most of the season.

Does anyone know, or can anyone propose, what Giles' role would have been in Season 6 if the character hadn't had to be abruptly written out of the show?
