I don't think I could disagree with what you've said but to only add this. I beleive it was imperative for the writers of the show to keep her more Buffy\Human than Buffy\General because she was the fulcrum of the show. Even real Generals visit the wounded and ask how they're doing and lay hands upon shoulders etc. If you lose your caring interest in who Buffy is and what she is then the show loses some of it's emotional momentum - I believe the viewer and actress loses too. She didn't even sheda single tear for him in private - I just don't think that meshes with real life or with the character from the previous seasons.
