Faroush trembled. His fear surfaced quickly at hearing Madeline’s angry voice.

“All I did was what Lalla Rahine ordered. He was continually pumped full of seven different kinds of drugs.” Looking straight into Rahine's deadly angry glare he shrugged and shifted his gaze toward Madeline’s dark one, he closed his eyes and nodded. “Of course, he has not been drugged for almost a week now, since Shantal and that traitor Gadari began to cook his meals.”

Rahine placed her hand over Madeline’s fisted one and gently forced it to lower to her lap.

“Allow him to speak dearest, we need to know in what condition your son is in before attempting to extract him.”

Madeline turned shimmering eyes toward Rahine. “You’re afraid he is beyond repair also? Did you see him before leaving the palace?”

Rahine nodded slowly. “Yes I did, he did not look good. But Faroush should be able to tell us much more about his condition.”

Faroush blushed softly before raising his gaze to meet Rahine’s. Shrugging he nodded his chin toward Madeline.

“The man was extremely weak when I left, he was suffering much but he lives. I’m afraid that his mind and body might be too damaged for him to be of any use.” He stated softly.

Madeline pushed Rahine’s hand away and sighed, lifting her hand to brush her hair she quickly clasped her hand over the hilt of a knife that she had hidden behind her back. Not giving any sign of what she was about to do, she swiftly
pounced on Faroush and stabbed him in the chest.

“Taste vengeance now Faroush! And never say I was not merciful. You will not suffer what Michael is suffering.“ she stated as she pushed the knife deeper into his heart.

Faroush gurgled something unintelligible before losing all control of his body, his limbs trembled several minutes before his eyes rolled into the back of his head and he went completely limp.

Rahine stared stupefied at Madeline as she leaned over and placed a soft kiss upon Faroush’s slack lips.

“What did he say?” Rahine asked with a trembling voice.

Madeline turned and shrugged nonchalantly. She pushed away from the dead man, taking a seat opposite Rahine she lifted her hand and gently tapped on the glass that separated the back of the car from the driver. The car immediately stopped and the door opened, allowing two men to kneel inside and quickly drag the dead body out.

“The usual disposal Madeline?” One of the men asked.

Madeline nodded before the door closed. Smiling she took her sister’s hand and dragged Rahine toward her.

“I could not understand him, but don’t worry, he was no longer useful to us, soon we will have my son back in our arms and then I might allow you to play nursemaid during his recovery.” Madeline stated in a sweet voice.

Rahine nodded and promptly pushed away from Madeline, taking a seat she closed her eyes and allowed herself to float into a meditative state.

“Madeline will kill me as soon as she has Michael, I must assure my survival before she enters the palace.” Rahine thought as she allowed her body to relax.

Shantal pulled her shirt over her leggings and quickly began to button it up, she smiled as she gazed at Michael through the reflection on the mirror.

“You look great Michael, I’m glad you’re feeling better.” She grimaced as the silk shirt brushed the covered but still tender flesh of her back. She took a seat and quickly strapped her boots on. Standing she met Michael’s gaze once again and shivered.

Michael nodded distractedly. Looking into her dark eyes; Michael felt the fear that ran rampant through her blood.

“You’re afraid I won’t survive the trip?” He asked as he stood and slowly walked toward her.

Shantal shook her head and turned, meeting his pale gaze she sighed and gently took his hand in hers. Looking at his pale hand she carefully laced her fingers through his.

“I’m afraid for you Michael, you’re still so weak and the drugs have not completely left your body yet. But we cannot stay here any longer, I’m afraid you are still being drugged somehow.” She frowned as he tenderly lifted her chin to meet his gaze.

Michael forced back a sharp pain that began to throb inside his head and slowly began to slitter down his neck and shoulders, slowly spiraling like a snake down his spine as he stared deeply into her dark eyes.

“Yes, This is not normal, I should already be recovered almost fully from any withdrawal.” Shaking his head he let go of Shantal’s hand and chin and took several steps back. “Tell me again the plans, in case we get separated.”

Shantal nodded and forced a small smile to grace her lips. “We are to follow the tunnel to the end, then turn right and continue until we see the light. As soon as we step away from the tunnel there will be a car waiting for us, Gadari or Omar will meet us there. The car will take us to a ship that will sail to the coast." sighing as she realized the toll Michael was suffering while trying to control his weakness as she felt the trembling in his hands increase. Looking into his eyes she gently continued. "Michael if we get separated, you must go to the bazar at Cairo's pig’s market. A man with one eye will be there. His name is Lotha, He has a large scar running in the shape of a moon down his left eye and cheek. Give him the note I gave you and he will take you to a ship.”

Michael turned and slowly began to pace the room, his hands behind his back. “will you meet me there?" he asked with trepidation.

Shantal nodded slowly and he sighed audibly.

"And after we sail away?”

Shantal turned away and rummaged through her closet. “That depends on you, we must reach Jordan within a week, from there you will return home and I......” Shrugging she shook her head and sighed. “I will disappear also.”

Michael stopped before her and carefully reached out to touch her hair, he gently pulled a fragrant curl making Shantal stand up, smiling softly he tenderly lifted her curl to his nose and inhaled. “Will you tell me your name?”

Shantal turned wide, fear filled eyes to meet his and shook her head. “You know my name Michael.”

Michael pulled softly on the strand of hair he had captured in his fist. “No, tell me your real name, the one your parent’s gave you.”

Shantal stood on tip-toes before Michael, her hands on his chest to keep herself balanced. “Michael please.” She begged.

Michael shook his head, controlling the grimace of pain from reaching his face.

“Shantal, a bargain, I will tell you my true name if you tell me yours. Deal?”

Shantal looked into Michael’s pale green eyes, losing herself in their incredible depths. She felt a shudder of desire slide down her spine making her heart beat faster. with a soft shake of her head she gently reached out and tenderly brushed her finger across his lower lip.

“I could die happy just gazing into your eyes.” She thought as she fought the fear of speaking her true name aloud again. For 10 years she had been forced to not speak it and now, she was one step away from freedom. Taking a deep breath, she gently curled her fingers around the lapel of Michael’s shirt and reached up. Her lips parted softly as Michael leaned down, their moist lips met in a soft moan of surrender that came from both of them. His lips molded and tugged with teasing expertise until she was open and vulnerable to the full ardor of his kiss. His other hand slid down her arm and gently cupped her breast. The silk that separated his thumb from the tingling peak of her breast melted to a shimmering conductor of his heat and will. Shantal felt the dizzying current and gasped against his mouth. She could feel the taking, entering motions of his tongue and she panicked. She could feel him pressing his entire length against her throbbing skin. With a soft groan she slid her hands between them and gently pressed on his chest, pushing Michael a breath away from her.

Frowning Michael lost himself in Shantal’s glazed eyes for a few more seconds before he realized what he had done. Taking a step back he brushed his fingers over his lips and stared at Shantal mesmerized.

“What have you done to me?” He asked in a mere whisper.

Shantal shook her head. “Nothing, I......” Turning away she pushed the painting to the side and turned to look at Michael. Before he could see what she was doing she disappeared into the tunnel allowing Michael a moment to lose control and shiver with the pain cursing through his entire body. A pain not only caused by the drugs but also by his rampant emotions, he cursed softly trying hard to control his desire and failing miserably. Looking down, he fisted his hands as his shaft pressed painfully against his jeans.

“Michael.” Shantal whispered as she extended her hand toward him.

Michael stared at the seemingly detached appendage in awe, his hand reached out and tenderly clasped hers. He heard a soft laugh bubble out of her before she pulled him into the tunnel. Standing nose to nose she gently brushed a finger
down his cheek and leaned over to whisper into his ear.

“My name is Aztrid.”

Michael stepped back and stared wide-eyed at the shadow of Shantal that stood mere inches in front of him. Taking a deep breath he softly caressed her wrist with his thumb. “Michel Phillipe.” He whispered.

Shantal smiled before turning away from him and and clasping his hand tightly in hers she dragged him behind her. “Thank you.” She whispered almost too softly to be heard. But Michael was able to hear it, he smiled softly, following this extraordinary woman to freedom.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Michael began to feel the coldness of the tunnel walls as they surrounded them in total darkness. He fought bravely the pain shooting through his body with every step he took.

“Michael? Do you need to rest?” Shantal asked.

Michael moaned softly before speaking. “No, I’m fine.” He stated through clenched teeth.

Shantal knew he was lying, but her sixth sense told her that he would not appreciate her knowledge, he was too proud to allow any weakness to beat him now. Shantal sighed and slowed down, turning she took Michael’s hand and pulled him to her.

“Well I do need to rest for a few minutes.” She reached into her backpack and carefully pulled out a bottle of water, taking a seat on the cold stone floor she took a long swallow and offered it to Michael.

Michael forced his shaking limbs under control, wiping a trail of sweat that was cursing down his neck, he slowly took a seat beside her and closed his eyes, attempting to find his lost control and keep the pain from unmanning him. He felt Shantal’s soft touch and snapped his eyes open. He looked at the bottle of water not knowing what it was at first. slowly he lifted his shaking hand and took the bottle, taking several desperate swallows until there was none left. He sighed and dropped the empty bottle at his side.

Shantal looked around her, her eyes had already accustomed themselves to the darkness of the tunnel. As she turned to gaze at Michael she noticed the uncontrolled trembling of his hands and reached out.

Kneeling across his lap, she made Michael jump, she pressed her hands on his shoulders and gently smiled. “Tell me how bad is it please.”

Michael shook his head, closing his eyes he clamped his teeth down on his lower lip. After several long minutes Shantal began to brush her fingers over his temples in a soft massage. Michael exhaled heavily and allowed himself to relax under her touch. Shantal’s fingers worked their magic as she tried to force Michael to tell her how sick he felt. She knew from the trembling of his body that he was barely hanging on and she was worried. They still had a long way to go before they reached the exit of the tunnels. She feared Michael would collapse and she was unable to carry or drag him to safety.

“Michael please, tell me.”

Michael’s eyelids fluttered softly. As they opened she could see the pain shimmering in their depths. Michael stared into her eyes for several minutes before he nodded in defeat. Closing his eyes again he allowed the pain to curse undaunted through him.

“I’m not sure I can go on, maybe you should continue and bring someone back-“

Shantal stopped his words by placing her fingers over his lips. “Never Michael. I will never abandon you. We will stay here and rest until you feel better.”

Michael shook his head wearily, his neck almost unable to keep his head from falling limp against her breasts. “You must continue.” He whispered. “They are waiting for us. Please leave me here.” He begged breathless.

Shantal pressed his head against her shoulder and gently caressed the back of his neck in small circles. Michael’s eyelids fluttered closed, as his mind began to become numb with pain he knew he didn’t have much time. He was now under the full effects of the drug’s withdrawal and he was sure his weakened system would begin to shut down soon.

“I can’t allow you to watch me die like this, there must be some way to force you to leave me here.” He thought sadly. He cringed as another sharp pain cursed through his body, leaving him weak and breathless. Pushing away from her he slowly lifted his hand and brushed his thumb over her cheek.

“I need you.....to deliver......a message to-“ He gasped and collapsed against her in a fit of coughing.

Shantal embraced Michael, her hands brushing down his back as he coughed.

“Please Michael.” She whispered against his temple as a tear slipped unheeded down her cheek.

Michael convulsed with the cough, not knowing how to fight the weakness that was beginning to claim his entire body. Finally the coughing stopped and he gasped desperately trying to drag in several lung fulls of air. Once he could breathe easier, he arched his neck and met Shantal’s fear filled, dark gaze. He reached out and tenderly brushed his fingers through her hair. His mind told him that he could go no further, but his heart ached to fight and follow
Shantal. Closing his eyes he slowly nodded.

“Help me up, we must make haste if we’re going to reach the car by the time specified.” Michael breathlessly stated.

Shantal smiled encouragingly before taking his hand and helping him to stand.

“You’ll rest soon, just fight for a few more hours please.” She whispered as she felt him lean heavily upon her.

Michael nodded and began to walk, step by step he fought the need to collapse and curl himself into a fetal position. The pain of controlling the muscle spasms that
cursed down his body was excruciating. He rehearsed the last words he would tell Shantal once they arrived at the ship. He was sure that he would not live to see Nikita or his children and a deep sadness entered his soul making it more difficult to fight for control. They finally reached the end of the tunnel and Shantal sighed with relief. She was barely able to drag Michael’s increasingly trembling and weak body behind her. She could hear him wheezing as she gently released him and helped him to slide down to the floor. Turning she heard the voces and clamped a hand over Michael’s mouth. Michael nodded and covered her hand with his, allowing her to withdraw her hand. taking the dagger she had hidden under her shirt she took several steps closer to the entrance of the tunnel and sighed with relief as she met Omar’s worried gaze.

“You were supposed to get here hours ago!”

Shantal nodded. “I know but Michael is not well.” She stated as she grabbed Omar’s hand and gently pulled him into the tunnel. There they found Michael, his knees lifted to his chest, his head lowered to rest upon his raised knees, his arms laying limp beside him as he bit his lip until blood cursed down his chin.

Kneeling beside him, Omar reache dout and gently lifted Michael's head up, lifting his lamp the light hit Michael's face full force making Shantal gasp in horror. Before them Michael’s arms shook softly, his eyes rolled over and over to the back of his head as he fought for control. Omar took Shantal’s hand and gently squeezed.

“I’m afraid to move him, he might convulse and die.”

Shaking her head, Shantal gently reached out and pushed Michael’s back against the wall, she tenderly pulled him toward her and wrapped her arms around his chest.

“I won’t allow him to die in here. Help me take him to the ship please.”

Omar huffed, nodding in defeat. “He might never reach the ship.” He stated as he reached over and carefully took hold of Michael’s legs, lifting them. He slowly helped Shantal to carry Michael out of the tunnels. They carefully walked down the incline to the waiting car. As soon as they reached the car Gadari opened the door and took Michael from Shantal, placing Michael on the back seat with infinite care. Once he closed the door he turned his angry glare to Shantal.

“How long has he been like this?” He asked in an exasperated voice.

Shantal ignored him and walked around the car, climbing into the car and gently lifting Michael’s head to her lap, her fingers immediately began to brush through his disheveled curls.

“About three hours ago, he wanted me to abandon him but I would not.” She lowered her head and sniffed softly.

Gadari stared at Omar and shook his head as he closed the door. The men stepped away from the car and looked out at the dawning sky. The lights of thousands of houses blinked like stars at them.

“He is too weak Omar, the withdrawals are draining all his recently gained strength out of him.” Gadari observed.

Omar nodded and clapped Gadari on the back. “Yes, but we must help him survive until he reaches Jordan, once there we can leave him in the capable hands of his men and take Aztrid home.”

Gadari stared at the sky lost in his own thoughts. Suddenly he shivered and turned to look at Omar. “Let’s go before anyone sees us.”

They both climbed into the car and drove away, never seeing the dark car that followed them.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Madeline hissed with annoyance as she watched Michael being dragged toward the car. She felt a tight band clamp around her heart and squeeze, she hated these feelings that Michael had slowly forced to the surface during their intimate training sessions. Taking several breaths she was able to control the undesired emotion.

“He’s almost dead!” She hissed once again as she turned her furious glare toward Rahine. “If he dies or suffers any permanent damage you will suffer worst pain.”

Rahine shrugged unconcerned with Madeline’s threats. She turned and gazed out the window and enjoyed the view of a awakening Cairo before her.

Madeline shifted positions in her seat and banged on the roof. “Follow them and make sure everything is ready when they arrive at the ship.”

The driver nodded and swiftly followed the black car toward the Nile, taking the cell phone he dialed and spoke several curt orders at the person on the other end. Finally satisfied he closed the cell phone and smirked with pleasure. His desire being to watch as Michael suffered countless horrors.

Madeline noticed the smirk and reached over to caress his bearded chin. “Soon Marco, you will enjoy yourself with his pain the way he did with yours.”

Marco O’Brien reached up and tenderly took her hand in his, placing a kiss upon her palm. “Thank you my love.”
