Oh my Nell. Thank you for those words.
Once again Bravo!
Way back a million years ago on the old WBMB I tried to say something similiar, tho certainly not as well! I was practically decapitated by my fellow posters then and there.
Michael really walked all over Nikita time and again but when he walked out and left her to face death after the Adrian's Garden (? I think that was the "It's not over until I say it's over" ultimatum episode) I thought it was the end of M for me, but as someone said above, he was so wonderfully handsome and such an interesting character, that I caved in. (as did Nikita!)
I really sstruggled to understand why he missed her so much when she was out of Section after her 'death.' I finally decided that he missed her more as a working partner than anything else --- as his 'side kick'. They were such a fabulous team in the field that it threw off his timing. It was as if his right arm was missing. And when he said to her on the rusty scow that 'he didn't realize how much he needed her' he, perhaps unintentionally, meant that he needed her as a team partner. And, beyond that, could that have been actually the reason that he brought her back into Section? He certainly managed to avoid being her lover once she was back.
And why was it just accepted by most of us that he couldn't be with Nikita as long as he was married to Elena? I mean, didn't we accept that he had actually 'married' Elena while he was truly married to his wife Simone? And why would it have been such a dastardly thing for a man who killed and maimed on a daily basis to have a lover even tho he was in a so-called 'marriage'?Boy, you are right when you said that we cut him slack.
My reason for saying that the story was unjust to Michael is this: Michael, even with all his blackness, was simply always polite, mannerly, and had a cultured persona. I just don't think that the story relected his way of dealing with any hurt or disappointment that he may, or may not, have felt.IMHO, he would not have reacted the way that the story had him react. ---Q
