Zandra,

I think the reason some people were objecting to this idea, is that there is already a dedicated team of RAH stewards to help lost-looking individuals and answer such questions. I would give newcomers more credit, than to assume that they need someone else to hold their hand and help them engage in conversations etc., like at primary school.

If you are in the day queue (non season-ticket) then there will be plenty of people in a similar position to your self. Although the majority of the season side will already know each other from previous years, it is not difficult to find at least someone to talk to - afterall you've got 2 months of queuing together!

Your hardest job is finding your way to the hall, after that the "red coats" can direct you to the correct queue. Alternatively, each queue (arena season, arena day, gallery season or gallery day) is labelled and people already in the queues will not bite your head off if you ask them anyway!

To answer your other questions, most newcomers will opt for arena tickets (I will allow other contributors to describe the virtues of the gallery!) sold by stewards in the queue or as you enter the hall. A season ticket is worthwhile if you plan to go to a lot of concerts and/or you wish to queue less but end up in a better position. Audiences are fickle and knowing how early to queue comes with experience. People will start queuing very early (i.e. before breakfast!) for a concert if it contains the name "Rattle", "Kissin" or "Vengarov" for example. However, that is only for prime position and you would still get in starting mid afternoon or later. From 4:30-5ish, the queues can start to build rapidly as people finish work.

Enjoy the season!
