I believe some concert halls have protection against mobiles.

I must admit I thought the Bridgewater Hall did, so I'm surprised to hear of the phone going off in a Manchester concert.

There's no better retrospective method than the conductor addressing the audience and trying to embarass the perpetrator. I'm sure I'd be one of hundreds who would thunderously applaud, and possibly floor stamp, any such announcement. It's nothing to do with snobbery. Who the hell wants to hear a *"*£%* mobile phone going off in a concert. It's hugely distracting and inconsiderate, and in any event it does us all good to turn the damn things off once in a while. I even take the battery out of mine, since software faults can conceivably cause one to emit a noise even when it appears to be switched off (that button is only a software switch).

What's actually needed is either:

(a) A Faraday cage enclosing the entire auditorium. A closed metal surface (wire mesh will do) will, unless I've forgotten my university physics, prevent RF transmissions in or out of the auditorium. Net result, no ringing phones possible. I believed (perhaps wrongly) that the Bridgewater had one of these. A bit difficult to retrospectively put in the RAH mind you.

(b) Transmit jamming signals at 900MHz and 1800MHz. Wouldn't have to be very high power to block all mobiles in the hall. Just turn it off at all times other than during the music. Unfortunately probably illegal, and it would most likely leak out all around Kensington. But it would dispense with the problem in one fell swoop.

However, I (allegedly) have an alleged engineer friend who allegedly concocted such a device with the intention of getting a bit of peace on trains to London. It (allegedly) worked a treat. No more shouted (and to loosely quote Bill Bryson) "Hello, it's Jasper. I'm on the train. I'm just calling for no apparent reason other than to let you know that I'm still a complete an*s, and as happy as a pig in s**t just because I've got this mobile phone".
