Simon. I love your contribution and feel the only way to respond to your kind words is to take some of your points as you make them, i.e. join you on your "ramble".
I quote,
"Derek, you're obviously a staunch Halle supporter. Were it not for the unerringly loyal and vocal support of their core audience, their most recent brush with bankruptcy may well have actually finished them. It is a testament to the strength of this support, that supporters feel personally sleighted when the band is criticised or is a catalyst for an empty house at the Proms."
Yes, and this was ememplified when I was queuing for their concert and several members strolled out to talk with us. Its true I did know one, (a fellow Irishman), but he introduced his fellow players me and when I asked as to how they were getting along with Mr. Elder they showed such enthusiasm, they were like members of one of our youth orchestras. They lauded their ensemble playing and said words to the effect that they were now the orchestra to watch. I asked them how they related to the BBC Phil and they said they go on extremely well and that there was not competition but co-operation, is that not a wonderful situation? Finally, they said of Mark Elder that whereas others promised "Jam tomorrow", he gave them "Jam today".
You go on to say,
"I don't think Southern bias has much to do with it. It appears to me that the staunch prommers are quite ready to point out the failings of the RPO for instance."
Would it not be that some people won't forgive the RPO for playing Pop Music etc. Yes I know they use a lot of different players, but so does the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
"I don't wish to start a flame war on this issue, but I feel that the Verdi Requiem on the penultimate night is a chance for them to prove that they can justify their presence at the proms. This is by no means assured IMHO, and it's perhaps something of a gesture on the part of Mr Kenyon to give them a chance not earned by their standards over the last few years."
Gosh, I thought you were talking about the Halle, now I am defending the RPO and glad to do so. Only last season I heard a great Prom concert from the RPO, I remember it well as I am a Bass Trombone player and I noticed some really great playing from their man. I could look it up but forgive me if I don't as I don't have to much time, I know it was some ballet music.
Finally Simon, I agree with all of the rest of your posting and your suggestions to encourage others to write to this forum. I was gently chided for not reviewing the concert myself and no doubt I have now contributed too much so.....the rest is silence. See you in the Bridgewater Hall Simon.
Regards,
Derrick.
