And noted defender of college values Brian Kelly doesn't like it:

Thankfully, before Oklahoma St- SDSU game the NCAA banned the QR Code emblem on their helmets. NCAA cites the ban on advertising on uniforms. That means we’re spared from this for now. Sports Illustrated reported Oklahoma St’s QR Codes will be placed throughout the stadium, including players bags, video board and drink coasters.

Speaking of helmets, the NFL has decided to allow players to wear the soft "Guardian" practice padded covers on the outside of their helmets. At least one player has announced that he will do so.

I have stated before how funny it is we have a technology in hand which is shown and accepted to mitigate concussions, worn all the time in practice, which is not utilized on game day for the simple reason that players want to look cool and caps don't look manly.

Once a small critical mass of early adopters puts on the Guardian caps, the trend will accelerate. In particular, I predict that it will happen first among married players. There is nothing like having a wife and a family to make a guy do the responsible thing.

...were goofy in the NHL. The Golden Jet would not have gotten that moniker with a helmet to hide his locks. Only HS and College kids wore helmets, then the league mandated that junior league players and rookies wear them. Then some younger players kept on their lids, out of habit or a breath of sanity. Finally, the league mandated for all.

Noted defender of college values may need to spend less time telling us what is "collegiate" in football and more time coaching up his defense. USC had the better wide receivers and both quarterbacks were excellent, but LSU had slightly better athletes everywhere else. Despite this advantage, when it was crunch time, the LSU defense underachieved just as it did all last season.

Brian Kelly is 0-1 for the third straight season since arriving in Baton Rouge.

That catch by the USC receiver in the second quarter was one of the best I've ever seen....

If LSU wants to stop losing openers, they might want to try scheduling cupcakes for the first game. I understand that some teams do that with regularity...

... LSU could schedule Florida State for the opener when the Seminoles are clearly having a down year.

In any event, congrats to Bill O'Brien on a nice debut at BC.

It wasn't just that Florida State lost to Georgia Tech (on a neutral field) and then to Boston College at home.

It was that Florida State got pushed around between the tackles in both games. Sure, the Seminoles graduated their star quarterback Jordan Travis from last season, but it's not a brand new team. These guys are the same ones who were jobbed out of a CFP berth last January. They didn't spend much time in the weight room this summer.

In fairness, I thought his hired defenders actually played reasonably well. But it's hard to say if he got his full money's worth.
