I hear they are changing their name to Six Pack.

What are odds Cal and Stanford decide flying to the East Coast isn't ideal and ask for re-admission?

The guess here is that the Pac-12 limited itself to six in hopes of convincing Stanford and Cal to come home. That way, they qualify for FBS status (minimum 8 teams), and only have to split media rights payouts eight ways.

Much will depend on whether Stanford/Cal (or the rest of the ACC for that matter) gets sick of the cross-country traveling and whether Stanford/Cal is allowed to leave the ACC without penalty.

If Stanford/Cal stay in the ACC, then it becomes another free-for all.

Wow, this is high stakes poker. As you might know, the Mountain West Conference bailed out Washington State and Oregon State last year. WSU and OSU were told by the other Pac-12 schools that they would not honor commitments to play the Cougars and Beavers in football as they departed for the Big Ten and ACC.

WSU and OSU needed football opponents in 2024 and the Mountain West Conference stepped into the breach, in return for a cash payment of $14 million from the each of the two Pac-12 schools.

WSU and OSU were negotiating with the Mountain West Conference about the 2025 season when the two sides announced that they had failed to meet their self-imposed deadline of September 1.

Now we know why the two Pac-12 schools felt that they had some negotiating leverage. At that exact same time, WSU and OSU were in talks to STEAL FOUR MOUNTAIN WEST schools. This is hard ball diplomacy.

I would love to talk to administrators from Boise State, Colorado State, CSU Fresno and San Diego State about what drew them to the Pac-12 two.

There is a very real possibility that more Mountain West schools will bolt for the Pac-12 if Cal and Stanford do not return. Then the MWC might collapse. Just as the Pac-12 did. And there might be two or four MWC schools left with no chairs when the music stops. Just as with the Pac-12. What a drama. What a turnaround.

When I fly to the west coast, I try to stay for at least a few days to spare myself the damage to my circadian rhythm. Last Thursday night, a friend called out of the blue and asked if I could meet him for dinner on Friday night in Las Vegas. Out I went. Then back East on the redeye Sunday night.

News flash to Cal and Stanford: That rapid transcontinental turnaround is going to get very old very quickly. I would not at all be surprised if Cal and Stanford opt back if the Pac-12 can get their economics to a point where they are in the same ballpark as the ACC. Especially after a year's worth of experience flying to the East Coast for midweek games in non-football sports.

How delicious would it be if the Pac-12 insists that Cal and Stanford pay their initial exit fee even if they return? I would love that.

What a save executed by Washington State and Oregon State. Their Hail Mary pass has been caught for a touchdown!

This hardball diplomacy reminds me of Japanese foreign service officers negotiating with their American counterparts about how to de-escalate tensions in Asia, but then informing the US State Department the decision had been made that the dialogue was not productive and would be discontinued. On December 6, 1941.

History repeats itself.

The Pac-12 will never get finances to the level of the other 4. The late start times away from East Coast primetime for big games, in the sports that matter to TV will always mean less media revenue.

The B1G strategy of covering multiple time zones is important... right now the B1G is betting that a true national profile will mean the most to media buyers. The SEC is betting on football as 1, 1A, and 1B. Eventually, they will want a west coast presence.

The ACC is basically a 2 time zone conference. And the fact that they have so many private schools, means that they don't have the 'subway alumni' reach that B1G and SEC schools have.

The PAC-12 (two) and the MWC have gotten somewhat cozy and have been looking at the bigger picture a lot- together. I'm not convinced this is a "blow" to the MWC more than an expected move designed to help the PAC-12 survive, yet not gut the MWC. The MWC has others they can look to to fill the breach. Time will tell, of course, but I think this will shake down okay in the end.

I do think that Cal and Stanford do need to reconsider their move to the ACC, though.

I agree with you, Steve. The Mountain West Conference has twelve members. They could combine with the Pac-2, add Stanford/Cal, and still be a reasonable size at sixteen, the same as the Big Ten or SEC.

But what a negotiating process! I would imagine that, at some point in the negotiations between the Pac-2 and the MWC, one of the Mountain West reps said, "You two need us more than we need you."

At this point, the WSU and OSU reps probably smirked to themselves, knowing that they had already taken the temperature of Boise State et al about bolting from the MWC.

A very possible outcome is Steve's scenario where everybody makes up and lives happily ever after. But the negotiating leverage has shifted and, in that kind of situation, it can be hard to reach an agreement because both sides overestimate their poker hand.

What a drama.

I have no idea if they have a guaranteed access to the college playoff.

But if they do, they the Pac-Whatever can expect that other G5 schools will at least return their calls...

The new rule is that the four highest ranked conference champions will be seeded #1 through #4 and receive first round byes in the playoff. The fifth-ranked conference champion is also guaranteed to make the field of twelve, most likely as the #12 seed because the other entrants will be at-large selections.

So I believe the Pac-2 would be on the same ground as the MWC insofar as, to get an automatic bid, its champion would need to be the next highest ranked conference champion after the Power Four.

But you're right in that WSU and OSU might be thinking, "We don't need to simply accept the MWC as is, including their also-ran's. We can reconstitute any way we want, including perhaps one or two teams from outside the MWC, plus the best from the MWC."

What a turnaround in two years, after WSU and OSU were the also-ran's left by the rest of the Pac-12.
