 Sun Belt Conference has fined Marshall $100,000 for opting out of the Independence Bowl. My guess is SBC members were counting on the Bowl payout share. Marshall had only 41 players available for the bowl. That includes 17 of the 22 first and second string opting out. Marshall probably looked back to what happened to Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Not a good look for the Sun Belt Conference. Marshall should appeal. I don’t see litigation as a possibility due to the costs. Unless it’s done in principle.
