AO,
I think one of your questions to me was about the meaning of the reference to “EDGE” in one of my earlier postings. This is the answer.

Megan Griffith: “The best way to sum it up is not skipping steps in having a vision and bringing the right people with me, the right staff,” she says. “Every success in my life was because I was able to find an edge, and here we have the Columbia EDGE, which stands for Energy, Discipline, Grit and Excellence. It’s everywhere in our program: We wear it on our shirts, it’s on the walls in our locker room. It’s our why — why are we doing this?”

Thank you for the explanation. Thank you very much. I'm a big fan of studying and learning how excellent coaches build a program culture. I think successful coaches usually explicitly and overtly try to build a culture that they proactively define in their own heads -- a vision, if you will, as Megan says.

Meanwhile, most corporate leaders sort of let the company culture develop as a side effect or fringe benefit while plans are drawn, factories are built and products are sold. It just falls out during the ordinary course of business.

It might sound dumb, but I'm even trying to pay more attention to the culture am I building in my own family. We're a team, right? And whether it's explicitly built or simply arises on its own, most teams have a culture or a personality. We might as well try to shape it.
