In reply to: Go Green 's message, "Former Yale Star Dick Jauron passes away" on 10:41:57 02/08/25 Sat

Quote from Jauron's daughter Kacy on Facebook:

"What we thought was some early signs of memory issues turned quickly into cancer in his brain, specifically a tumor that was causing some very out of character behavior,” she wrote. “They quickly did a scan of his body and unfortunately they found cancer in his lungs, liver, and bones.”

“The silver lining in all of this is that the situation escalated so quickly he never had any idea what was going on nor was he in any pain,” she continued.

Sad to hear this; my thoughts are with his kin.

I started attending games the year after Jauron's senior season, so I never saw him play in person. But I remember being a youngster in awe of his performance on the 1972 highlight film, and considered him as the gold standard against which all future Yale RB's would be judged.

That film can be found here:

(PS - no need to watch the few minutes prior to this starting point! If you know, you know...)

Direct links to a few of his highlights - there are probably more that I don't have time to link now:

vs. UConn -

vs. Colgate -

vs. Brown -

vs. Columbia - notable as it was the winning score in a late come-from-behind effort (and even brought Cozza off the sideline to celebrate in the end zone)

It also resulted in this classic photo:

Are you available to work for the Yale Athletics Department? They could definitely use your for Football Sports Information Director. The post seems to be vacant.

Memories of that cannon going off. After each score. I asked Tom Beckett, whatever happened to that. He didn’t even know about it. Cheerleaders, actually interacting with crowd. Instead of doing nothing. But standing in their 15 yard area. (yawn).!!
The immortal Sabby Frinzi, the best action photos, The New Haven Register, would have 2 pages of exclusive photos of the game. Articles, special interest a player or of the game it self., the account of the game.
Now it’s a paragraph if you’re lucky. Forget a meaningful picture. Very good memories. Sigh thank you kindly.

Gentlemen; toy cannon must be in mothballs . Our current athletic Director should go back to the archives to see how it used to be and figure out how to bring it back starting with increasing the number of persons in the band. I for one have many fond memories of the excellent performances by Mr.Juaron truly a blue legend.

The toy canon is much preferable to the air horn.
