Loved Dick Jauron, took my future wife on our first date to see him play in 1970. I was lucky enough to meet him and get a picture with him, something I will alway treasure.
My best to his family and friends

Dick Jauron was a man of many athletic talents. He was a three time All Ivy League running back and played three seasons on the Bulldog baseball team. During his NFL career he was selected to The Pro Bowl, a time when that meant something other than a weekend of photo shoots and dodge ball .After His NFL head coaching career ended his was inducted into the College Football HOF. I’m saddened to hear of his health problems. Condolences to his family and associates.

I'm very sad. Perhaps Yale's greatest running back. Carm Cozza said he was so elusive you could be in a phone booth with him and never touch him.

R.I.P.

The pride of Swampscott!

A class act. So sad, seems he was a guy who always took care of himself.

Condolence to Yale fans and the Jauron family.

An outstanding person and an amazing football player. One of Yale's greatest.

Superb as a player and a person.
Harvard is probably still stewing about letting this local (Swampscott High) superstar get away. NB, he was put off by the Vietnam era commotion in 02138.
During Carm Cozza's seemingly endless decline and before Tony Reno's ascent I kept hoping he'd return to the Bowl and lead us back to excellence.
And speaking of letting the big one get away, keep an eye on our #51 this fall. He played his high school football within ten miles of Harvard Stadium. Perhaps he was close enough to become disenchanted.

Too young to have seen him play in college but he always seemed to represent the classic ivy ideal.

Quote from Jauron's daughter Kacy on Facebook:

"What we thought was some early signs of memory issues turned quickly into cancer in his brain, specifically a tumor that was causing some very out of character behavior,” she wrote. “They quickly did a scan of his body and unfortunately they found cancer in his lungs, liver, and bones.”

“The silver lining in all of this is that the situation escalated so quickly he never had any idea what was going on nor was he in any pain,” she continued.

Sad to hear this; my thoughts are with his kin.

I started attending games the year after Jauron's senior season, so I never saw him play in person. But I remember being a youngster in awe of his performance on the 1972 highlight film, and considered him as the gold standard against which all future Yale RB's would be judged.

That film can be found here:

(PS - no need to watch the few minutes prior to this starting point! If you know, you know...)

Direct links to a few of his highlights - there are probably more that I don't have time to link now:

vs. UConn -

vs. Colgate -

vs. Brown -
https://rumble.com/v1z3882-yale-bulldogs-highlights-1968.html?start=2511

vs. Columbia - notable as it was the winning score in a late come-from-behind effort (and even brought Cozza off the sideline to celebrate in the end zone)
https://rumble.com/v1z3882-yale-bulldogs-highlights-1968.html?start=2809

It also resulted in this classic photo:

vs. Princeton - (w/ an interview after the TD)

Memories of that cannon going off. After each score. I asked Tom Beckett, whatever happened to that. He didn’t even know about it. Cheerleaders, actually interacting with crowd. Instead of doing nothing. But standing in their 15 yard area. (yawn).!!
The immortal Sabby Frinzi, the best action photos, The New Haven Register, would have 2 pages of exclusive photos of the game. Articles, special interest a player or of the game it self., the account of the game.
Now it’s a paragraph if you’re lucky. Forget a meaningful picture. Very good memories. Sigh thank you kindly.

Gentlemen; toy cannon must be in mothballs . Our current athletic Director should go back to the archives to see how it used to be and figure out how to bring it back starting with increasing the number of persons in the band. I for one have many fond memories of the excellent performances by Mr.Juaron truly a blue legend.

The toy canon is much preferable to the air horn.
