Just curious, does anyone know why so many Asian men and women excel at ivy tennis. It seems every team has an inordinate number of Asian players. Just wondering.

Watching the Columbia women bury the Brown women in basketball, I have to hand it to Megan Griffith. The Columbia women had more talent, but they were also much better coached. And I say this in all due respect to coach Monique Leblanc who has done a fine job at Brown. The Columbia women came out of the gate like a screaming banshee and never let up. Before you could blink, the score was
15-0, and at that point, the contest became no contest. I was impressed. Confirms what I have always said, great coaching is the equalizer in ivy sports.

Interesting thoughts. Regarding you 2nd comments, it's not just coaching. The following players on Columbia may be more talented basketball players than anyone on Brown's roster: Weiss, Collins, Henderson, Page, Broom, Simmons, Rafiu, Avlijas. Although I suppose good coaching attracts high level talent.

And now to address Brian G's comment. All the players you cited on the Columbia team could be better than the best player on Brown but watching C play also showed superior technique and cohesion. The C players guarded very effectively, closed down the passing lanes, and positioned themselves well for rebounds. Most importantly they were fighting just as hard at the end of the game as they were at the beginning. Now, that is good coaching.

G&BI's point about good coaching is to the point - the Columbia men played hard all the way through, too, against Brown and were rewarded for it. However, their so-called fans care only to dissect the coach's post-game demeanor and remarks. Interesting how some folks seem to get over-the-top credit in victory; while others get more grief following wins than losses!?!?!

Joe Paterno once said "coaches get more credit than they deserve when things are going well .... and they get more blame when they are not". Valmas nailed-it on the Columbia/Brown MBB and WBB games last weekend.

Interesting, too, that the Brown grad with the ever-present Brooklyn accent made his mark, both memorable and ignominious, in the Keystone State. Interesting because the Columbia men's basketball team traveled to Pennsylvania early in the current season and took down Villanova by ten points.

That was noteworthy at the time; and brought to mind last night in a bigger way when that Villanova team defeated eighth, nationally-ranked, St. John's, in the same Finneran Pavilion in Villanova,Pa. Of course, this is, in no manner, saying there a nationally-ranked men's basketball team on Morningside Heights; but, as our Brown contingent suggests, there may be some actual coaching taking place with the Columbia men as we more readily acknowledge as related to the Columbia women.

Shaving three times a day won't improve my looks,
but Mrs. IG still tells me I am a hottie.

You post these only occasionally, does that mean you shave just as occasionally?

GBI: You're right about Megan and great coaching being the equalizer in Ivy sports. When I watch her Columbia squad, I see what you see--the effect of really effective coaching. The players are very cohesive and disciplined and mesh together like a well-oiled machine. Kinda like the legendarily tight-knit former Red Army hockey team. Megan's the complete package, and having her be an alumna-coach is the icing.
