Subject: How To Keep Head Coach Megan Griffith in Morningside Heights

In reply to: Ivy Inquisitor 's message, "Re: Final Pre-ILT Charlie Creme Projection: 3-Bid Ivy" on 14:38:21 03/14/25 Fri

Inquisitor, I love your use of the word "deserving." That's a word I don't often use in connection with the NCAA selection committees.

Having said that, it's clear (to me, at least) that Columbia's at-large bid last year was a "make-up call" or, more accurately, a "lifetime achievement award." I think the committee felt that Columbia was the Last One Out in 2023 and was "deserving" of being the Last One Out in 2024.

So the committe said, "What the hell. We don't want to make the same team the LOO twice in a row, so we'll throw the Lions a bone."

So the League has been the recipient of some largesse from the committee once before. We shouldn't forget that.

Here's my solution to the challenge of keeping Megan Griffith in Morningside Heights:

Name my girlfriend Megan the Columbia MEN'S and WOMEN'S basketball head coach.

That's right. What does this accomplish?

(1) You pay Megan what she would ordinarily make as women's coach PLUS what she would make as Jim Engles' replacement. That is straight cash, homie, intended to keep her in the Dodge Fitness Center.

(2) Megan Griffith would for the 2025-26 season be the most famous college basketball coach in America. That is valuable to her brand. It's not cash in her pocket, but it is real, tangible value which can eventually be monetized.

(3) She will coach the men's team completely hands on, going up against James Jones, Mitch Henderson, Dave Klatsky, Jon Jacques and the two Mikes, Martin and McLaughlin. Maybe Tommy Amaker will still be in town although there's talk on the new board that he's headed out.

(Look at the ESPN+ replays. Goodness, Tommy looks tired. He's been at this game for a long time and the rules just changed in a way that was too much for Jay Wright and Nick Saban. Why would he be immune. He's got all the money he'll ever need.)

If Megan can win against that array of talent, her stock will go through the roof. She would be the toast of the town and could name her price for her next job, whether it be on the men's side or the women's side.

(4) The Lady Lionesses would be coached day-to-day by her current assistants. They will get a small bump in salary to acknowledge the additional responsibility. But Megan will have supervisory capability and the last word on management. This would still be her team. The current assistants win.

(5) Columbia University has a serious public relations problem right now. This is the kind of pub you as an alum want. This will shower favoable coverage onto Low Library.

You're welcome, Columbia University.

The legend in Tigertown is that, on his way out of town to join the Lakers, Butch van Breda Kolff recommended that Princeton hire then unknown Pete Carril. Perhaps apocryphally, van Breda Kolff challenged his bosses, "He's the best choice, but you won't have the balls to hire him."

Megan Griffith is the best choice for the Columbia men's program. Does the administration have the fallopian tubes to hire her?

An Observer: You offer a creative proposal for Lions Men’s and Women’s Basketball. Wouldn’t that turn your girlfriend into a glorified auxiliary “athletic director” for Columbia basketball program? Further more wouldn’t make Coach Griffith more of a “CEO” and “special adviser to the coach” and her assistants as “COO’s?” As you stated, the publicly will be ground breaking. This idea reminds me once Tennessee offered the legendary Pat Summitt a “promotion” to coach Tennessee MBB. She responded “How is this a promotion” and stayed with the Lady Volunteers. Could this happen again with Columbia? If Magen Griffith were to become the next Lions MBB Coach , she’ll go from mid major’s best kept secret to trailblazer and example for all women’s basketball coaches.

Inquisitor, that story about Pat Summitt, if true, is awesome. Well, if it's good enough for an SEC team, why shouldn't Columbia consider it?

I see Megan as the full traditional head coach for the Lion men's team. She runs all the practices, leads recruiting and does all the game day management.

She would be the CEO, as you term it, of the women's team. Having managed the women's assistants, she would know what she can delegate to them and when she might need to step in.

You are correct that this would be ground breaking, affecting all of women's basketball and all women's coaches. Bill Tierney left Princeton for Denver in part to grow the game west of the Mississippi. Buddy Teevens was the first football coach in America to hire women assistants.

Megan would be following in that grand Ivy League tradition.

Harvard's senior guard, Harmony Turner just scored a school record 44 points to lead Harvard to an exciting 70-67 comeback victory over Princeton in the semi-final of the Ivy League Championship Tournament. Harvard will now face Columbia tomorrow night for the Ivy League Title. There is little doubt in my mind that regardless whether Columbia or Harvard wins the Ivy League, Columbia, Harvard and Princeton will all be playing in the NCAA tournament.

Doing a little digging around the non-ivy teams hovering around the last four in/first four out line, the principal contrast seems to be blow-outs — the three Ivies together have been essentially competitive in every game with every opponenent. The other contenders have had nights when they’ve been utterly embarrassed. Not quite sure how you treat that in committee, but the chances of getting a bum game, even against a 1 or 2 seed, from any of CHP is basically zero.

Excellent research, joisey. That game-in, game-out competitiveness from our top three teams is one reason why their NET ratings are so high. We'll see if that matters tomorrow evening. The selection committees are comfortable moving the goal posts as needed.

An Observer: According to what occurs during the next three weeks , Columbia and Coach Griffith may have to make a pivotal decision. For Columbia, in order to keep one of the better coaches, they might have to pay a premium. As for Megan Griffith, I suspect other schools will “out bid” Columbia. Columbia’s ace in the hole could be offering her an a first if it’s kind opportunity opportunity- coaching the men’s team. If this plays out this way, then she’ll have a her own pivotal decision: Take the money and run or remain in Morning Side Highlights and make coaching history. If the latter happens, then the world will be watching and she’ll be a coaching inspiration.

I don't know if anyone here has the particulars of Coach Griffith's contract. I'm sure if she wanted and the offer from elsewhere large enough, she could try and break the remaining years (if any) on her contract with CU.

But it may be premature to think she is automatically going to be weighing options, or that it is incumbent on CU to make her this hypothetical offer AO has posited. Nothing wrong with either speculating or conceiving of that kind of role; it just may not be an automatic at this point.

What's to say she is actually satisfied with the current state of affairs? She seems to be recruiting stronger and stronger classes, she is obviously getting the support from the school, why would she not want to stay in her current role and see if she can't perfect the trajectory?

Despite the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune which certain external actors seem determined to suffer upon the university, the sense is that the athletic department has things well in hand. As has been pointed out here and on the other boards, a couple of key recruits, and some dynamic coaching, ala Griffith and Poppe, could have the men's BBT back in the swing in reasonably short order.

How about them apples?
