Penn kicking the FG on 3rd down, leaving time on the clock = dumbest decision in the years.

What was the point? Hedge against a bad snap?

Unless your long snapper has a history of bad snaps, there's no logical reason to try that kick on 3rd down. Trust in the defense? Look at the scoreboard - Harvard had put up 42 points on it already, and their kicker has a leg.
Priore arguably made the worst Ivy coaching decision since Cozza put linemen on the onside kick receiving team leading Harvard by 8 with less than a minute left in 1968. Inarguably, the worst decision in that stadium since then.

Nah. Tom Williams going for it on 4th and, what was it 23, up on Harvard, with a great punter.

Good point. I'd blocked that one out. Thanks for the reminder (sarcasm).
Okay, the worst Ivy coaching decision in the last 14 years. Priore must have attended the Mike McCarthy School of Clock Management.

Yale's fake punt on 4th and 22.

.... said that Penn didn't have any timeouts left.

So Priore had a choice of kicking the FG on third down, or doing a QB sneak (or a kneel-down) and rushing the FG unit onto the field with 25 seconds left.

He opted to kick on third down.

Obviously, it backfired. But there was at least some logic behind the decision.

It looks like Harvard had a timeout in hand. So even if Penn had run a play to center the ball for a FG, Harvard may have called timeout to preserve time on the clock for their turn with the ball.

I'll walk back much of my criticism from yesterday of Priore's clock management. Mea culpa!

Our guys played hard. Congratulations to Harvard. It was truly about the team that had the ball last.

Ivy football is really fun.

couldn't penn's fg team allowed clock to run down to 2 seconds, and then kicked the fg?

--also why couldn't the qb have spiked the ball to stop the clock?

Harvard had called timeout before the third down play, with 25 seconds left. Harvard had 1 TO left, Penn had none left.

Penn couldn't run a third down play and then used a spike to stop the clock, as that would've been their fourth down play.

There was no need to spike the ball as the third down play, because the clock was already stopped due to Harvard calling timeout. Even if they had done so, it would have left most of the 25 seconds still on the clock for Harvard to run their last possession.

Penn could have used a running play on 3rd down to center the ball for the FG, but then one of 2 things would have happened -- either:
* Penn would have had to rush their FG team onto the field with the clock running, risking the clock running out before they got set, or...
* Harvard would have used their last timeout to preserve 20+ seconds for their last possession.

I suppose there's a third option: Penn throws to the end zone on third down -- if a receiver is open, you throw to him; if not, throw the ball away. It takes time off the clock without having to rush the FG team into position. But there's a risk that you hurt your FG opportunity with a sack, intentional grounding call, or interception.

Ultimately, I think the bottom line in Penn's situation at the end of that game is: play better defense.
