Haven't tried it in a heater; but for straight veggie oil (SVO) in an engine, you need to prefilter it (preferably through a 5 micron final filter, though 10 micron should also work) - this is usually done before it goes into the fuel tank (thus preventing crap building up in the tank). You also generally need beefier injectors and a stronger pump, plus hotter glow plugs if used. The biggest issue is that SVO has a tendency to crystalize if it is cold - cars often have a heater added to the fuel tank in colder climates (eg in the UK) to keep it liquid. You also need to check the fuel lines - some are prone to decay/dissolve if used for SVO.

Biodiesel should work as a simple replacement.
