Subject: opinions needed

Please excuse the length of this post, but I am interested in your opinions, and want them to be offered in the most valuable context.

I have had the luxury of sailing other people's boats for a while, and am now in the position of searching for one of my own.

Here is what I have been sailing, and my impressions:

1. Solings -- I love a Soling. Really nimble. Very responsive. Fun to race. Low on comfort, and obviously limited in a cruising setting. BUT, my love for them indicates to me a need for a pretty high level of performance.

2. Marshall Cat -- A complete dog in my opinion. Wont point. No performance. I DO like the centerboard that lets it into 2+ feet of water, though.

3. Cabo Rico 38 -- Very comfortable. VERY VERY heavy. Needs a TON of air to get it to perform. Keel is too deep for my gunkholing tastes. Way too pricy, too.... but fun in a lot of air and with at least 2 other good crew.

4. Catilina 30 -- pretty nice, but kinda beemy. I only sailed this a couple times, and really didnt get a chance to evaluate its performance. Comfy, though.

5. Tartan 34 (the older one with a CB)-- I really liked this boat. The CB keeps the draft at about 4 feet, but with the CB down, it pointed pretty well. BIG foresail compared with the main... i don't exactly know why. I wonder if this would be an issue singlehanding or with a light crew??

SO-- it seems like I am after a boat 28 to 32-ish feet overall. Sloop. Low keel or centerboard, or scheel, etc seems good to me. Some level of comfort for 2 for living aboard at least 6+ months per year (we are backpackers so take "comfort" as relative to a 4lb 2-person tent). Performance is important.

What boats would you be checking out????

THANKS
j.
