I am sort of kidding, I guess. Okay not really.

As you said, since you even mentioned the Soling, you are really, really after performance. I love old plastic classic as much as the next guy, but few of them would really be great performers. They could be upgraded to be very good performers, but few go through the effort.

May favorite performance oriented boat with moderate comfort would be the Aphrodite 101. It would absolutely smoke any of the Alberg's or Tartan's etc. Actually it would probably leave the Soling behind. They will sail at over 5 kts in 6 kts of wind. They came with inboards but that can be changed and maybe you can find one with engine troubles. I almost did.

I also like the Yankee Dolphin (Sparkman & Stephens). It is a keel centerboard 24 footer (a big 24 ft) from the old Midget Ocean Racing Rule.

Both of these boats have Sail Area to Displacement ratios over 17 (17.8 Dolphin & 21 Aphrodite). Without overlapping headsails. I think you want a boat with a large amount of sail before you hank on a genny. You shouldn't need a genny to move in 10 kts.

In the end, I would recommend patience. Keep sailing other peoples boats until a great performer comes along.

One other comment about performance. Many people think it is about speed. I think it is about how often you get to sail. Many of the older Alberg designs might go well if your definition of light wind is 6-8 kts. But just think how much more versatile a boat is if your light wind definition is 3 or 4 kts, or less. For me that equals less rowing and I hate rowing.

Cheers, Bill
