Subject: THANKS for the comments so far, and some replies

Thanks for the input so far--

My budget--- well, I can probably go to 2 dollars per pound (that's double Jay's base!)-- plus invest in re-rigging and sails etc. The amount I'd put out would depend on the boat, of course. Let's say for starters that the boat itself probably couldn't exceed 20K or so.

the albin vega is a boat i have admired at a distance for a long time-- but i have never sailed on one. What are its particular strong points??

Ari's comments about looking for what's out there rather than a particular boat makes some sense, but I have the luxury of not being in a hurry, and the desire not to do toooo much trading around. SO, I'd at least like to pursue a boat from a vetted very short list.

I have read Vigor's book, but have some complaints. It seems like the book tends to emphasize heavy under-canvassed boats-- understandable since the focus seems on blue-water capacity. My goals are probably coastal with the occasional passage-- like to the Bahamas, and then island-hopping south. I suppose a crossing to Bermuda is a possibility. I dont plan on crossing oceans.

I have seen an alberg 30 at a distance, and liked it a lot. Does anyone have direct experience with this boat? Is it a good performer??

Bill's comments about performance are much appreciated. I agree that the issue isnt only speed, but light air capability. I actually have given some thought to what one could do to make a soling fit my needs-- the really big downside is that I dont think that they are quite strong enough to be long-term reliable. I know that when we race them we break things...

THANKS, GANG-- any other comments are appreciated!

j.
