In general Jay and the Pardey's have covered this subject very well in their writings. In both cases you have people who have sailed engineless in small cruising boats. Their conclusions about sailing ability are similar. Generally, you want a higher S.A. to disp. ration than the 15 or so normal for many off shore boats, but to go with that you need to be able to quickly reef down. Instead of a reliable engine and the minimum of sails, you need more sails to cover all conditions. You will also need to carry lots of stuff if you live on board and travel anywhere. You will find the super light displacement boats do not perform well if loaded down with all the crap you will inevitably acquire living aboard. Better to have a little more displacement and a design that can still sail well (if adequately canvassed) and still carry all the needed gear.
To the previous list of boats we might add the vererable Cheoy Lee Offshore 27, and Jay's old boat - the Pearson Renegade. Slightly larger, but a great performer - the Yankee 30.
