[> EUREKA! -- Dan Wale, U16 Lock, 03:32:43 08/18/06 Fri

I've only just found this site even though I attended the Summer Camp at Mill Hill in July 2006. I was invited to attend by Alun after I had registered with the Exiles via the WRU site. Maybe that's why there aren't many messages - not everyone knows the site exists! (I've put it on my favourites now though.)

On another subject, I had a shoulder injury at the Camp which turned out to be a bit worse than I originally thought - but if you're reading this Alun, it's all healed, I'm in full training and I'm itching to get stuck in to the new season.

Midlands Region - Elite Training. -- Gareth Davies (Welsh Exiles - Midlands Region), 06:25:48 04/08/06 Sat

Further to recent e-mails, just a reminder that the monthly session scheduled to take place at Wellbeck College in Loughborough on Monday April 10th has been cancelled. Unfortunately the facilities are not avilable that evening. Midlands Regional training night will continue in October. Keep an eye on the web-site for details. Meanwhile please remember the Assessment Days - April 9th at London Welsh for NEXT SEASONS under 16s squad and at Mill Hill School on April 23rd for NEXT SEASONS Under 18s squad.

If you have any queries ring or email Alun Rise.
07739 358958 alun3rise@hotmail.com
The Exiles run U18 and U16 teams, Thus the assessment if for entry into these ie U15 this year into U16 squad and U16 and U17 this year into U18 squad.
Training nights also have younger age groups.
About 80 boys showed an interest at the Rosslyn park 7s and some have already returned the registration forms. Time is relatively short so if others wish to be considered return the forms asap.

Good luck

Peter

How did the U16s do against North Wales? Also, I have heard that the U16s have been fielding U14 players- is this true, as I believe there are U16 squad members picked at the Mill Hill Camp who have not played at all?

Exiles U16s -- Dewi, 05:27:37 02/21/06 Tue

In addition to Simon's comments, I understand that there were a number of players who were not original squad members in the summer. If they have pushed squad members out, how are the originals (some of whom may have scored well at the camp) to play in front of selectors as promised? I am now beginning to doubt the aims and objectives of the exiles regarding player development.

Exiles site -- Gill Williams, 14:26:40 02/02/06 Thu

Hello,

My son played for the welsh exiles under 16s last season but what with travelling and injuries did not request a trial this time round.
However we both enjoy going on to the website but are dismayed to see there are not entries since last July.
I do pay a direct debit to the welsh exiles every year as i feel it is a very worthwhile cause but feel it only fair that we are kept up to date on yow things are going.
Can anyone tell me why the website is so out of date.

In the trial i had one session in the game at fullback and didnt even get a touch of the ball, and had no contact back from that until 2 months later when i was only assesed in 3 areas , i was unable to demonstrate any skills and was given the cold shoulder. I turned up to every monthly clinic last year and heard nothign this year please could you let me know more information.

The U18s lost 40+ 0. The first 20 minutes was all exiles and played at a very fast pace. The ref pulled a hamstring after 20 mins. and when he changed the game turned in favour of the BCOW. It was obvious that the BCOW had trained and played together for some time! They were very organised and the scratch exiles team had no answer to their sustained attacks.
Subsequently it turned out that they had included 5 U19s in their team and I am sure that this had some bearing on the final result.
Nevertheless it was an enjoyable day and we were made very welcome at the Corus ground, though after a sunny start I got very cold by the final whistle.

U21 Assesment -- Gareth Williams, 13:10:36 09/16/05 Fri

I was wondering if there are any assesment days for Welsh Exiles U21's for this season. I have never played for them before but I am Welsh Eligible through my grandfather. I played for Newbury Mens 2nd XV 2 seasons ago aged U19. I then played Leeds Uni 1st XV and Berkshire Mens County 1st XV last season aged U20. I primarily play openside flanker, but have played alot at hooker aswell. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

At the camp, I think they told all the boys there, that they would be the U18 squad for this year.
I think Alun is back from S. Africa this weekend, so it may well be worth contacting him next week to clarify the position.
I don't think there are going to be any U17 games this year, bur things may change.

Player selection -- Wynne, 11:27:33 06/26/05 Sun

Well said Peter...I think you summarised the position most accurately. The exiles do have a very difficult job especially since the loss of funding.
As you say trails at the best of time, and without any background knowledge of the players, can be such hit and miss affairs..but what are the other options without full time coordinators monitoring potential players progress over a period of time. The exiles simply do not have the recources.
Also I understand that a large number of players turned up for the trial who did not even give prior indication that the would do so. How can the coaches plan for this...they would have planed for lesser numbers, and perhaps therefore were unable to spend sufficient time in asessing each player. Perhaps if they knew how many who were going to attend they would have arranges for more assesors to be present.
I speak from a highly disappointed household in Yorkshire were my son has played for his county 12 times, but will not be at the exiles camp. However it is not right to complain or have sour grapes, that is totally unacceptable. Opportunities are always there for developement and he has come away knowing that he must continue to work hard at his game if he wishes to realise his dreams. At the end of the day if the player is good enough, he will make it ( as 'mum' quit rightly pointed out)
Sorry for all that...and any way I wish all the guys a great season next year. Successfull or unsuccessful..to what ever standard..enjoy your rugby!!!!!!

Martin Jones -- One of the lads, 10:14:46 04/27/05 Wed

I'm not entirely sure if this has already been said or not, but the news was certainly new to me. After attending the U17 assessment camp on sunday I was surprised to see the absense of the imposing figure of Martin Jones. It seems Martin had moved onto bigger and better things, he's been appointed as first team coach of London Welsh for next season. I just wanted to congratulate him on his new position, and as a player, express some of the immense gratitude all the boys have for all the hard work he's put into the exiles over the past few seasons, I know he certainly bent over backwards to help me. So in short, thanks for everything Martin and good luck for the future.

Dai Jones -- Garry Owen, 04:04:30 03/01/05 Tue

I'd just like to put my point of view in response to Dai Jones (real name?). I think the work of the Exiles is superb, giving many welsh qualified youths the chance they would not otherwise have got. You only have to look at the number of exiles representing the nation at age group level to see that the exiles punch above their weight. As Martin pointed out, this work is done on a voluntary basis. I for one would like to say thank you to all concerned.

Just wanted to say what a good game it was, and how well everyone played,we dominated in the first half and stepped off the gas a little, and they snook in a try or two, but overall the game in my eyes was a success, its never easy trying to play like a team when we dont know each other, but we always seem to manage quite well. Also thankyou to the coaches who help give structure to the limited time for training and for givin up their time again.

the U16 games this season -- Welsh wilko, 10:36:01 11/12/04 Fri

Hi i have been attending your elite coaching training sessions once a month at old deer park i was wondering how do you pick the U16 welsh exiles team for the forth coming game against the North of wales and the Boys clubs. Do you pick the team from the players who attend these sessions or do you have a group of players already who are the U16's. Please explain thanks.

U17 v Scottish Exiles -- Player, 02:11:52 11/09/04 Tue

It was an honour to represent the Welsh Exiles last weekend against the Scots. Played at London Welsh home ground Old Deer Park the match played in tremendous spirit was won late in the second half through a penalty by Laurie Evans (10). Both teams scored one unconverted try to give a 8-5 final scorline. We were superior at lineout but the scots disrupted the scrum. Thank you to the coaching staff and Martin Jones for the opportunity to wear the Welsh Exiles shirt. I look forward to the match against North Wales in December.

[> [> enquiry for re selection -- Gareth P. Morris, 06:57:32 02/06/04 Fri

I am at present in my third and final year at UWIC, and have represented the exiles through john davies at 18, 19 and 20 age groups. I would still like to represent them at under 21. My date of birth is 7.7.83. I have played for both UWIC seconds and first teams. Winner a BUSA medal last season. I have also attented exile training camps. I am extremely keen to re-establish myself with the exiles. I was asked to play for pontypool, but uwic would not allow this. As the boy who played 1st for uwic last year has now returned - it seems that i will be sitting on the bench, and wasting away. I hope you or John can help me with this. Rugby union is my main love. But i have been offered a contract with newport rugby league team for the summer. My position is scrum half, and my school was St Joseph's Ipswich. My telephone number is 01443 206422. My uncle in australia is keen for me to play out there, but i really would like a club for the future in wales or england.

It was great to see the Welsh Exiles trailer at the Rosslyn Park 7s tournament on Monday. To clarify the current position regarding trials. Remaining this season 2003-2004 are two matches at U16 & U18 against the Boys Clubs of Wales in Porthcawl on January 11th 2004.
The Exiles committee will then be present at the Rosslyn Park National schools 7s tournament in March. This will be followed in April with an U15 (this season) assessment day so that we can select players to attend the Gwent regional U16 development days in July. Due to the number of new registered players at U18 & U17 we will be organising a trial day at Old Deer Park probably late April 2004. If however you feel that you are of international potential please call me on 07803-210-171 so that a selector or representative can watch you play. It is important that all Welsh Exiles who are playing representative rugby keep me informed of progress to enable us to promote you to the national selectors.
The dates of the U18 development day will be on the agenda at the next Exiles meeting in December and will be posted as soon as venue and dates are confirmed.
