The Atkins diet - Is it dangerous?

I have to answer, yes it is in the long run. For a quick fix, it is a good approach, but a quick fix simply means you are going to end up back where you started in no time flat. The term quick fix will tell you that.

The Atkins diet has a tremendous marketing machine pushing behind it. Have you ever wondered why you are now seeing so many Atkins promotions? Even Subway has gotten on the bandwagon. There is money to be made here people!

That is good for those that are marketing the Atkins friendly foods and diets to you but is it good for you? No and you will find out that the Atkins diet plan can be a realy demon later in life, probably in about 6-8 months when all your body's systems are going wrong. What kind am I speaking of? Take a look at the list, and by the way, the list is not all inclusive. This is only a partial one.

* kidney stones
* hair loss
* immune system suppression
* mental function suppression
* gout
* skin problems
* digestive disorders
* liver problems
* poor to low energy
* rebound effect on weight lost, cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure

The Atkins diet is also a low calorie diet in disguise. The body's main source of fuel is carbohydrates, not fat. Fat is only burned in the mitochondria during exercise and as a part of your body's metabolic processes but in small amounts. The brain uses more carbs than any other organ in the body, yet the Atkins diet forces you to eat way too low of an intake of carbs to support brain functions. Confusion can set in along with mental fatigue.

Are you exercising? Don't expect to see many changes in the body. The carbs, which drive the muscles contactions are not there to help you lift a weight much less peform the necessary aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise derives it's energy from the liver. No carbs there either. So where does your body get its energy? From a process called gluconeogenesis. This is the breakdown of protein into a lesser and poorer source of glucose. That protein comes from muscle tissue which can come from the heart. If that happens, you are probably in metaboic acidosis and you need to be hospitalized. Not to frighten you, but death could be a real possibility.

So is the Atkins diet friendly? No, I have told many of my clients it is a demon in disguise. There is no excuse for sensible eating habits based upon your specific body needs and metabolic requirements. Along with strenth training and the righ types of cardio, you can see changes in your body that Atkins himself could only have dreamed of.
