Race for Newburgh mayor is three-way contest

NEWBURGH – A third candidate for mayor of Newburgh has emerged. Hael Stewart-Fisher, a registered Democrat, will face off as an independent, against incumbent Democratic Mayor Torrence Harvey and Republican John Guidice. Several years ago, Guidice served as a city councilman.

Stewart-Fisher, a three-year resident of Newburgh, is running because he would like the city to be more inclusive, prosperous, and transparent.

“It has so much incredible potential and so much diversity. It’s kind of ripe for a really big renaissance. But after being here for a bit and looking at the politics and things around here on the city council and the mayor, I just felt like they are basically impeding that change, impeding that transformation,” he said.

Thirty-one years ago, Stewart-Fisher ran unsuccessfully for city council in Kansas City, Kansas.

Since moving from Brooklyn, he has served as president of the Newburgh Preservation Association and secretary to the Transportation Advisory Committee.
