Subject: F.B. thoughts on Illuminated

Illuminating thoughts from Ms.Susan Knapik from Facebook:

While I’m not a huge fan of the way this article is written, it does summarize some key points from the city council meeting the other night. Newburgh Illuminated is a HUGE production and has always run until nighttime. The police chief and commissioner, who are absolutely under the thumb of the city manager, want to end the festival at 7pm this year citing “public safety concerns.” But let’s be clear: if it were ever about public safety concerns, we would not be screaming into the void that the fire and police departments are alarmingly understaffed, and the city would not be wasting money on a completely unnecessary fire commissioner. As with pretty much all of the highly questionable decisions made lately, it’s about money and control. Staffing DPW, the fire department, and police department for Newburgh Illuminated costs extra money which in turn hurts the city manager’s bottom line and looks bad on his résumé.
So many things happening under the regime of this current city manager are alarming, including the lack of transparency and communication. If it were simply that the comments section on the city’s Facebook page were turned off, I could understand it. But it’s not ok for attendees of city council meetings to be silenced or censored, even if they are offering an unflattering opinion. It’s not ok that the heads of our police and fire departments are not allowed to speak about official matters. It’s not ok that Newburgh is wasting money on hiring a fire commissioner to work at the pleasure of the city manager to control the narrative when they have been pleading instead for more manpower. It’s not ok that the media isn’t receiving requested information that should be public knowledge.
The city manager is no dummy. In fact, he is the opposite. He is cunning and knows exactly what moves to make in order to gain a worrisome amount of control, and a generous raise for himself.
