EXT – TUNNELS – NIGHT
A young woman in her late twenties, we’ll call her Jenny, is on her way home from work at around 6pm (Note: In England, in October it would be very dark by this time) She’s talking on her cell phone as she reaches a tunnel
JENNY
I swear Craig in accounts was looking at her chest today…no they’re not real…£3,000 every ten years…yeah…ha ha I know like footballs aren’t they?
She looks a little unease as the temperature drops and the wind picks up along with her pace
JENNY
Yeah my car broke down last Monday, I’ve had to work everywhere in the damn rain
(pause)
Oh…yeah okay I’ll give you a call at about nine…bye
Jenny slips her phone away and wraps her jacket closer to her – she looks around still uneasy, like she can feel something bad is coming. Her pace picks up before she finds herself actually running and tripping on a root.
Jenny doesn’t move as the ground shakes lightly – suddenly a burst of light comes up and the floor explodes open
CUT TO. (V.O SCREAMING)
INT – RUBY’S CAFÉ – NIGHT
Jack and Darren and sat with two plates of fries and a milkshake – Darren is dipping his fries into it
DARREN
I’m not a freak, I’m just special
JACK
That what your Mum tells you?
Darren ignores him as an ambulance jets past closely followed by a police car and a fire truck
JACK

Dawn is with Ryan as they pull up to the hospital
DAWN
So, how come you decided to tag along for the ride?
RYAN
I don’t start back at Uni until November – it’s only a part-time course, figured I’d make myself useful
DAWN
That’s fair – wheels and all
RYAN
So, what’s your deal?
DAWN
I need more here
RYAN
Do you have powers or something? How did you get into the whole crime fighting gig?
DAWN
Oh…It’s a long and complicated story
RYAN
Long and complicated is good
DAWN
That’s what my sister’s motto is
RYAN
What?
DAWN
Nothing – so what’s the deal with you and…you?
RYAN
Well me and me, we actually just go by ‘Me’ now…it saves confusion. I…I was in prison a while back
DAWN
Oh.
RYAN
I killed someone…well, not entirely but they thought I did
DAWN
I don’t understand…
**FLASH BACK**
‘August 2002’
A sixteen year old Ryan and a twelve year old Jamie are outside the wedding reception of their parents as Ryan hears screaming in his head.
JAMIE
You’ve gone green
RYAN
Yeah…bad food
Ryan looks around and sees two women drunkenly walking down an alley with a man – he knows instantly this is the woman who was screaming
RYAN
I think I need to hurl – I’ll be back in a minute
Ryan follows them down the alley, picking up to a sprint as he hears a scream – he gets there to see one of the women is stabbed with a polgara demon style poker.
RYAN
Get away from her
The demon grabs the other woman – Ryan looks up at a half crushed old wall, and uses all of his mind to shatter it and rise the bricks into the air.
Ryan forces the demon to stab himself in the arm and release the woman who immediately sprints away. Ryan crushes the bricks down onto the demon and heads to tend to the injured woman – she’s dead.
Ryan’s hands are stained in blood as the demon dissolves to nothing and the police arrive – arresting Ryan
BACK
RYAN
She took three years to come forward – I’ve been travelling since
DAWN
(awkwardly breaking silence)
I…I think this is her room
Dawn and Ryan slowly enter the room, ignoring the police banners
JENNY
Are…are you the detectives?
DAWN
I’m Detective Summers this is Seargeant err…Ryan. We understand you were attacked last night?
JENNY
I didn’t…I thought the police stuff was over for today?
DAWN
We’re not with the police miss, this is extensive research into the attack
JENNY
It wasn’t like an attack, it was…it wasn’t human
DAWN
Are you saying it was an animal miss, a dog perhaps?
JENNY
Could a dog do this?
Dawn looks a little horrorfied as Jenny pulls back bandages to reveal harsh burns and blisters
JENNY
It was…nothing I’ve seen before, I was so scared…it was like a dragon
CUT TO.
INT – DARRENS KITCHEN – DAY
DARREN
A dragon?
DAWN
That’s what she said
Darren throws a bunch of meats in between two pieces of bread and takes a large bite from the corner
DARREN
Like a fire breathing one?
DAWN
No the ice spitting kind and would you swallow before you speak
DARREN
Sorry
Ann walks in with bags full of shopping, practically tipping over
ANN
What are you two fighting over now?
DAWN/DARREN
Nothing
ANN
That sounded actually sincere – I’m so proud
DAWN
We grew as people
ANN
You should have! I swear I don’t understand how someone so small can eat so much – you’re just like Buffy
DAWN
I’m pregnant
ANN
Good for you
DAWN
And apparently a sucky liar
DARREN
Just like Buffy
ANN
You kids got any plans tonight
DARREN
Eat. Sleep. Good combo
DAWN
We have things to do
DARREN
Like what?
DAWN
That thing
ANN
Oh one of those ‘Mom’s not allowed to know until ten minutes before she grounds us for it’ things – go, be criminals. I’ll punish you when you get in
DARREN
Mom we’ve discussed this remember?
ANN
Right. Don’t try and be funny it doesn’t suit me, I know, I know
DARREN
Money please.
ANN
Back at ya rent boy
DARREN
What?
ANN
Why should I give you money when I buy all your food – you should pay me?
Darrens face drops at the concept of rent
ANN
Darren I’m kidding – take ten out of my purse and don’t be late back
DARREN
I have a key
ANN
Yeah and knowing you and…knowing your friends, that money will be spend on drink and you’ll tumble in and wake me at three in the morning so – be early, be safe – don’t be killed by angry morning Mom.
(beat)

DARREN

DAWN
I’ll get him home Aunt Ann
DARREN

DAWN

The two of the walk out, still bickering as Ann shakes her head
ANN
So very precious
END OF PART ONE
INT – COLLEGE – DAY
Jack, Jamie and Darren are in the back of class completely ignoring the teacher
JACK
Isn’t there like a law saying child detectives can cut class to go be…child detectives
JAMIE
You’re like a whole new level of idiot
JACK

JAMIE

DARREN

Jamie looks at the clock – ten minutes left

She grabs her bag and leaves the other two in shock

EXT – COLLEGE – DAY
Jamie is stood out at the front of the college as Tanya walks past
JAMIE
You’re um…Casey’s friend right?
TANYA
Not friend so much as…she doesn’t try to run me over as much as most people
JAMIE
That’s great, um, how is she? You know since her Grandmother…leaving
TANYA
She’s taken some time out – she’ll be back next week
JAMIE
Do you…did she say anything about what happened?
TANYA
Just that she was retiring and moving to Darlington
JAMIE

TANYA

JAMIE

TANYA
So, sorry I didn’t catch your name are you a friend of hers?
JAMIE

Jamie walks over to Ryan’s car and climbs in
RYAN
What’s wrong, you said it was an emergency?
JAMIE
It is – it’s raining, I just got my hair done yesterday
RYAN
We need to work on the actual definition of emergency

RYAN

Dawn is stood at the barriers with Darren
DAWN
Wow. Amberfield police are worse than Sunnydale
DARREN

Dawn climbs under the tape, Darren snaps it and walks past
DARREN
What exactly are we looking for?
DAWN

Wow my mind can hardly hold all this detail at once
DAWN

Darren picks up a snapped, long, yellow nail
DAWN

Dawn and Darren are walking up to the house as the Dawn tosses him to the floor, leaping over him as a ball of fire comes at them
DARREN
What the…
They look up in horror as the beast approaches
DAWN
We can’t…
Darren stands to run, Dawn grabs his ankle to pull him down
DARREN
What are you doing?
DAWN
You can’t try and fight it! He’ll cook you!
DARREN

DAWN
What’s he doing?
The dragon man begins to walk away ignoring them completely
DAWN/DARREN
Jenny!
CUT TO.
INT – COLLEGE – NEXT DAY
JACK
I fold
JAMIE
We’re playing pairs
JACK
Oh, then, I’m bored
JAMIE
Everyone off playing super hero again?
JACK
Darren will be in later apparently – he stayed at the hospital last night
JAMIE
Shock to the system, no wait – it’s not
JACK
He is a bit keen
JAMIE
He can’t help it, but he’s second string – he doesn’t need to do it he’s just doing it. He’ll be dead by Christmas

Jack stares at Jamie who’s playing with her keys

Jack turns to Jamie’s eye line and sees the dragon man walking into one of the college halls

Four minutes later…
Ryans car comes to a skidding halt in the car park
RYAN
Okay Dawn you are never being allowed anywhere near this again!
DAWN
Sorry. Impulse – it happens
Darren looks out the window and sees two police officers approaching
DARREN
Oh the joy
Ryan looks up at the window – the dragon man is still in the building
RYAN
I’ll call you
Ryan teleports out of the car
DARREN
W…where is he going?
OFFICER
Step out of the car please…
DAWN
But…
OFFICER
Can I please see your license?
DAWN
I…
OFFICE
I assume you have your license
DAWN
It’s at home
(quiet)
In California
OFFICER
I’m afraid you two are going to have to come with me!
