I’d forgotten all about that, you are easily entertained. I’ve been looking for a similar forest service device for a long time. It would open a few doors to 4-wheeling to say the least. BTW, If memory serves correct, wasn’t the Manitou trip the time you crossed in the fog, and wind, while navigating by compass because both GPS’s failed? You make a good point.

I did a little checking. I wandered over to our plat map bookcase and looked up the Beaver Island area. Gull, High, Garden, Hog are public and totally wild. The SW shore of Beaver is public, but I fail to see any value in going to Beaver for anything other than replenishing cigar rations. There is an ideal launching point on the mainland that is easily accessed by Jeep. It’s state land so we can camp all we want on the coast, and we’d have options if we didn’t cross the lake due to weather. It’s ~9.75 miles from the end of the road to Squaw Island (private, but good for stretching legs or an emergency). Incidentally, the ferry runs about $70 w/ kayak, takes 3 hours and travels 32 miles from Charlevoix. Which means that we might be able to PADDLE to the islands faster than the ferry can get us there.

I’m definitely up for planning a trip, but I’m not positive this is the best option (yet), more research is needed before I can release my findings. The timing is good, I see Jeni off for Antarctica on Wednesday, so I’ll have lots of free time in the next 3.5 weeks to write up a trip plan.
