Don't forget the mountains of yellow trim on every possible part of your uniform, one of those leather wrist things which hold your caps, multiple pistols, spurs, Stuart feathers and et cetera.

Honestly, it's nice to see a true dismounted cavalry impression which lacks all the crud associated with reenactor cavalry units which pretend to have their horses somewhere to the rear.

A few of us did a 3d MO Cav impression at a July event. We did Vicksburg and ate the ration as noted in a diary account a week before the surrender. The daily food ration was: 1/4 cup corn meal; 1/4 cup field peas; 1/4 cup bacon; 1/2 cup rice. I actually had this ration at two events on back to back weekends. Didn't eat any offered food at those two events. Haven't eaten pea bread or pea anything since. I don't know how those guys kept going on such short rations for so long.

The food was filling and slightly tasty - at first - but not very satisfying. After a few days of it, I didn't want any more, but we ate it because it was that or nothing. We gave some longing looks at the food eaten by folks in our host unit. Hard to stay away from it. The way we devoured our measly grub must have been a scary sight to those people eating cake and pies.

Lost a few pounds from those two weekends.

Silas
