Rather than have extra officers and sergeants who don't know their duties, make two companies of approximately twenty soldiers each. There is still only one commander, the senior captain. The extra officers and sergeants are necessary if the unit is carved into two platoons. Since people don't know how how handle themselves in platoons, call them companies and people know what to do with themselves.

The duties and responsibilities of officers and sergeants are generally the same in the platoon scheme, but it's easier to have a regiment with similar sized companies of approximately twenty each than to have one huge company of forty.

Lines of command and control for the higher ups are easier when the companies are united under senior captains. Might even see the regimental commander form the command into divisions if word of this gets out.
