Subject: FRANKLIN - CdC Clarification

Gentlemen:

I don't know if any one is still accessing this Board but if so, I wanted to take this opportunity to provide a point of clarification to what has, apparently, given rise to certain amount of confusion among our ranks regarding the CdC and the Franklin event this October.

It has come to our attention that there are rumors that the CdC will not accept any men over a size 42 in raising Austin’s Battalion for Franklin or as Members in the CdC. This neither correct nor accurate.

It is primary focus of the Members of the CdC to research and achieve absolute authenticity. We know and understand that that each of us strive for the highest level of accurateness and authenticity in our impressions and the Members of the CdC have made it an objective to take this, for lack of a better phrase, “to the next level”

To this end, the Members of the CdC have adopted a standard consistent with that of the soldier who enlisted with either the United or Confederate States Armies at the time of the Civil War. With these objectives in mind, and goals of authenticity, we have accepted the fact that neither the Federal nor Confederate governments fabricated depot clothing for men that were over a size 42. This limitation did not restrict either government from accepting and enlisting men over a size 42, nor does it limit or restrict participation with the CdC. At the time of the Civil War, men over a size 42 were required to find ways to outfit themselves through private purchase, from home or in some cases accepting the fact that their arms would hang in an “ape like” fashion and buttons would be stretched to the limit for fastening. An authentic standard for the men who enlisted in the army in 1860-65 and an authentic standard that takes us to this next level.

If we look at this “standard” for what it is, it is possible to see it actually does not limit what men over size 42 can wear, to the contrary it expands it. Being the size of the “average” soldier during the War, there are limitations to what I am able to wear according to government issue or permission. For those of you who are not able to fit into the government issue sizes, you would have access to much wider range of choices of what was worn in the field, as either an officer or as an enlisted man.

With this, it needs to be made clear that it is not the intention of our Members to limit, restrict or forbid, in any way shape or form, participation in events of the CdC. The CdC seeks to encourage each of us, as living historians, to strive to be as authentic in every area of our impression and accordingly our hobby.

If you have any questions about the Franklin event, or the CdC please do not hesitate to contact me, or Don Smith to discuss any concerns or other matters.

We are hoping to raise the Austin’s Battalion for Franklin as soon as possible and would look forward to your participation.

Respectfully…

Steve Johnston
CdC
