After months of intense preparations, organization, controversy and excitement, the time has finally come for Ecuador to host the Miss Universe pageant.
79 of the 81 delegates of Miss Universe 2004 had their first official presentation to the press and special guests, during the Welcome Dinner held last night at the Convento La Merced in Quito.
Presented by Miss Universe 2003 Amelia Vega, each contestant paraded in alphabetical order in an improvised circular runway that surrounded the fountain in the atrium (internal patio) of the convent.

From Angola to Vietnam, wearing colorful cocktail attire (and evening gowns in some cases), some delegates had the privilege of being more applauded than others. Some displayed their excitement of being in Ecuador. Misses Ukraine and Japan were eagerly welcomed by the attendants. But obviously, the queen of the applause was Miss Ecuador, Susana Rivadeneira.
After this small 'runway show', the audience was addressed by Ivonne Baki, president of the Ecuador Foundation 2004; Mayor of Quito Paco Moncayo, and the president of the Miss Universe Organization, Paula Shugart. Then the delegates proceeded to have dinner with the special guests.

The night closed with the presentation of the official 'song' of the pageant, Pais Acuarela (Watercolor country), composed by Ricardo Perotti.
This event marked the first public appearance of this year's delegates. Tonight, they will join President Lucio Gutierrez at the Presidential Palace for a private gala.
The contestants have had their official photos taken, and have been adapting to the climate. The last delegates to arrive were China (Meng Zhang), Venezuela (Ana Karina Anez), and Vietnam (Hoang Ngoc). Miss Universe officials are still awaiting the arrivals of Miss Ghana (Menaye Donkor) and Miss Turks & Caicos (Shamara Ariza), who should be joining the group today.
The event, which also included folklorical performances and the most exotic dishes, ended with a spectacular display of colorful fireworks as the audience and the press could determine who are the front runners for this year's title.

The competition, which will also have two live performances by the biggest Latin cross-over artist in history, Gloria Estefan, will be televised by the NBC Television Network (9 pm ET/delayed PT). Ecuador packs its perimeters with more points of interest than many countries twice its size. As this year's host country, the competition is sure to heat up under one of the most extraordinary backdrops Miss Universe has ever seen. Last year's broadcast of Miss Universe (June 3, 2003) scored the pageant's highest 18-49 rating in 10 years (4.3 rating, 12 share among adults 18-49, 12.1 million viewers overall). It won its time slot by a commanding 43% among adults 18-49 and by 53% among total viewers. Dominican Republic native Amelia Vega, MISS UNIVERSE 2003, will crown her successor at the conclusion of the two-hour primetime telecast, before an estimated worldwide viewing audience of more than 800 million. 83 countries have confirmed their presence in Ecuador
Quito, May 5, 2004
The Miss Universe Organization released preliminary information about the countries that will participate in the Miss Universe Ecuador 2004 pageant. The number of countries can increase or decrease in the following days and will only be official when all the candidates arrive to Quito on May 13.
America is the region with most representatives. 32 nations will be present. Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Curacao, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela will have representatives. Argentina has not confirmed yet its participation.
Europe will have 28 candidates. Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine will be in the contest.
Angola, Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa will represent Africa and Australia, China, South Korea, India, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, Mauricio, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taipei, Turkey and Vietnam will represent Oceania, Asia and the Middle East.
