Berliz was born in Lagunilla in the State of Zulia and raised with her brother and sister in a town called Bachaquero, it is a small town in Venezuela known for its oil industry. Currently a student at the Universidad Delk Zulia (Luz) Odontologie; her ambition is to qualify as an orthodontist. She is also a part time model. One of the most interesting jobs she has had to date was working as assistant organising integration activities for children with special needs.

Miss World Venezuela - Susan Carrizo - Student of Dentistry - 21 years - 1.77 meters of stature (5'10").

What is the best thing about your country?

In Venezuela, I like the people because they are warm, they are also very joyful and have a good sense of humour.

If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

I would like to win this pageant in order to grow, promote my country’s name and help those in need.

I would choose Tom Hanks ‘Cast Away’ since he since he should know how to survive in that situation.

What is your message to all the other Miss World contestants?

My message would be to participate in the pageant, always giving it their best, without envy or bad intentions, so that when it is all over, each one of them knows they did well, without hurting anyone.

You’re judging the final five contestants, which question would you ask the finalists?

My question would be: If you won the Miss World pageant what would you do during your reign, in order to be worth of a tribute?

Take a look back to Chilean representative to Miss World - Veronica Roberts. This young lady have done good so far in joining the Miss World Pageant last Dec. 4. Although she didn't make it to the finals but still she tried her best and make proud and honor of her nation. Here are some of the photos we gathered just for her.

THE RIGHT CHOICE - Absolutely stunning. That's all we can say about the new Miss World, Maria Julia Mantilla of Peru. As a matter of fact, GB's first words about Miss Peru, right before the delegates arrived in China, were:

"Among the Latin delegates from the Americas, who have not won the Miss World crown since 1995, the clear standout is Miss Peru, Maria Julia Mantilla, a classical and at the same time distinct beauty who looks like a Miss World from every angle, and, most importantly, doesn't look fake as a result of the excessive number of cosmetic surgeries most Latin beauties are submitted to nowadays".

She was also our beauty investors' #1 choice since their very first bet, and placed among Miss Cyber's top 5 (most photogenic).

All in all, if the voting system and the selection of some-finalists and finalists were unclear to most Miss World followers, at least Miss World managed to pick the best winner for the 4th year in a row.

MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THE 5 FINALISTS

Dominican Republic (1st runner-up), United States (2nd runner-up), Poland (finalist), Philippines (finalist).

"Among the Latin delegates from the Americas, who have not won the Miss World crown since 1995, the clear standout is Miss Peru, Maria Julia Mantilla, a classical and at the same time distinct beauty who looks like a Miss World from every angle, and, most importantly, doesn't look fake as a result of the excessive number of cosmetic surgeries most Latin beauties are submitted to nowadays".

She was also our beauty investors' #1 choice since their very first bet, and placed among Miss Cyber's top 5 (most photogenic).

All in all, if the voting system and the selection of some-finalists and finalists were unclear to most Miss World followers, at least Miss World managed to pick the best winner for the 4th year in a row.

MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THE 5 FINALISTS

Dominican Republic (1st runner-up), United States (2nd runner-up), Poland (finalist), Philippines (finalist).

If most fans agree with the placement of Dominican Republic and USA (a stunning delegate and favorite since the beginning), the same cannot be said about Miss Philippines. Going for her was probably one of the most beautiful gowns of the night, however, it was surprising to see her end up as Queen of Asia and Oceania, over stunning Miss Thailand or Miss India. Even Miss China or Miss Vietnam, who were semifinalists, were expected to place higher.

The truth must be said (and heard): ever since the Miss World organization started the "worldwide voting thing", it realized where the "golden pot" was hidden, and we can now expect Miss Philippines to place high year after year. It was an intelligent marketing strategy, which worked both for Miss World and for the Filipino fans. In the end, Miss World is a business, and businesses call for money.

As for Miss Poland, she was always a top 20 contender, who probably arrived a bit further than expected, but certainly deservingly so. The girl is gorgeous and very refreshing.



THE SEMI-FINALISTS: FROM EXPECTED TO "WHO?"

China, Vietnam, Russia, Czech Republic, Wales, Australia, Antigua & Barbuda, Mexico, Nigeria, Trinidad & Tobago. Four of them were already known (Mexico, Wales, Australia, Antigua & Barbuda), three were expected to do well (China, Russia, Trinidad & Tobago), and three could be considered as "surprises" (Vietnam, Czech Republic and especially Nigeria).

With such a strong and competitive African group (Angola, Kenya, Ethiopia, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Egypt), only Nigeria, a delegate who was barely noticed in the past 4 weeks of competition and who did not do well in Miss Universe, was chosen. It reminds us of the 1980's, when one African delegate was "thrown" in the semi-finals almost as "an obligation". African beauty deserves more attention and respect.

Czech Republic, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise: not as facially beautiful as some of her predecessors, many of whom unfairly "left in the ice", she was stylish and had a body to die for.

'MISSES' WHO WERE HITS: Unfortunately there are always those who most of us wished would score high with judges and fans (again, bad idea...), but they didn't. Beauties not to be forgotten are the representatives of Angola, Belgium, India, Thailand (incredible!), Bulgaria, Hungary (looked spectacular yesterday!), Panama, Slovakia, Spain, Brazil, Paraguay, Ethiopia, Northern Ireland, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Greece, Germany, Georgia (best figure in the whole contest), Namibia, Kenya, Korea, Cayman Islands.... just to name a few.

THE SHOW: the production was once again very good, maybe even better than last year's. Everything was very fashionable and clean, Chinese performances were entertaining, and so was Lionel Ritchie. What was not clear was the voting criteria, and, once again, who were voting.

First the 'judges' were introduced (or more like the 'orientation panel'), then the winners of "Best Gown" (Belgium) and "Scholarship" (Jamaica) awards were made public. Right after that came the announcement of the 5 winners of "fast-track" competitions, followed by U Decide videos of these five. Then, 5 more finalists, more videos, the remaining 5, and their respective videos. The 5 finalists were then chosen (based on what, we don't know) and interviewed, 1 by 1.

A top 3 was announced, and only after that Julia Morley read the names of the second runner-up and then the winner. The new formula actually added excitement to the final moments of the show.


In the end it was a good show, with a fantastic winner whose beauty will be appreciated and celebrated all around the globe. Congratulations to the new Miss World and finalists!

The final week of Miss World 2004 is here; and the 107 delegates have been rehearsing the show so everything turns out perfect.

The initial count of 112 was reduced when the contestants of Uruguay, Mozambique and Northern Marianas did not arrive for undisclosed reasons; then Miss Austria (Sylvia Hackl) left the pageant after 10 days in China. Miss Egypt and Miss Vietnam were the last ones to arrive.

Miss Austria, Sylvia Hackl, during the 'Beach Beauty' competition, carried voting number #505. She left the pageant a week ago. An Austrian paper informed that the airline lost her luggage and she could not get any help recovering it or getting a new wardrobe, so she decided to fly back home. Sohu

The "You Decide" special was shown this weekend in over 50 countries, which had the opportunity to meet the delegates up-close. The event was hosted by Troy McLain during the "World Beach Party".

All delegates spoke in English (after being carefully guided by the producers) and told anecdotes about them and their country; while telling the audience why they should vote for them.

This year, there have been a lot of changes in the Miss World itinerary since the delegates arrived to Sanya. The trip to Beijing, as well as a tour of China, had to be cancelled; the You Decide special was supposed to take place at the Miss World Theatre, and it had been announced that the Scholarship winner would 'fast track' into the finals, but there were some surprises planned.

This year there will be Top 15 semifinalists (unlike 2002 and 2003, where they had 20). Five of them are the winners of the 'fast-track' events, which are:

-Beach Beauty
-Most Talented
-Miss Sport
-Top Fashion Model
-Contestants' Choice for Miss World

Yes, you read right, the fifth fast-track position will go to that delegate whose fellow contestants believe would make the perfect Miss World. We wonder if the delegates were allowed to vote for themselves.

The winner of the 'Contestants' Choice Award' will be announced during the telecast on December 4th.

The remaining Top 10 semifinalists will be the contestants with the highest number of points after the voting is closed. It's not clear if the winner of Miss World will be selected with the votes counted before, or during the final telecast. Details will follow.
