The sorrel stallion was shocked to his very core. Elven, his strong, stoical sister, was falling to pieces. Another flash of fury ignited within him. More than ever, he was determined to make someone pay. There was no cause for Elven to be hurt like this. Pushing the rising rage down and tamping the flames into submission, he focused his concentration on comforting the grulla mare. His arched boa tightened around hers, gathering her into his embrace like only family could. Her hot tears saturated his crimson pelt, tugging his demons out of their restraints. With ruthless control, he forced the feral rage back, allowing the emotions to simmer just below the surface. Once her sobs subsided into sniffles, he reluctantly withdrew, looking directly to her eyes before she could shield them.

The anguish in those clear eyes brought another crushing wave of empathetic pain. With his velvety mug, he brushed at the dark rivulets her tears had left on her ashen face, wishing whole-heartedly that he could brush away her heartbreak as easily. Unable to bear the intensity of the emotion she projected, he moved closer to gather her to him again, his heated breath puffing against her shoulders.

"It hurts, I can see that." he crooned softly. "Who is it, Elven?" His question was spoken so low, it was possible she wouldn't hear it. If she truly didn't wish to answer, she could have that as an excuse. But one way or another, Hex would find who did this and they would pay. He could allow this to happen and not retaliate. He'd never be able to live with himself.
