I'm not sure if this has any relevance but us guys in GB short cut the scrum in the teams defending 20m area. That goes from Super League through the National Leagues and Academy (Under 18 and U21 levels.
We (I hope) hardly miss any knock-ons and forward passes in this area as the touchie on the near side (after marking the 5 metres and before the ball being fed) will take up the mark in line with the scrum so there is always at least 1 official watching the scrum base and break up of the scrum
