Subject: Recruting high profile ex players into refereeing

With Andrew Johns retiring from playing at the youngish age 32 I would think that the ARL could see this as a great opportunity to try and recruit him into refereeing

In cricket its a very big issue (particularly in the UK) that ex players move into umpiring as the next phase of their career in the sport. We have seen high profile ex 1st class players in Australia like Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker given an accelerated push thru the ranks and now these guys after a year or so are umpiring state cricket and i'm sure both of these guys will be umpiring international games in the next few years

I'm very surprised the ARL doesnt have a similar focus on recruiting ex players into refereeing. With most players retiring not long after age 30 they could give 10 good years to refereeing.

Could Michael Stone or anybody else please tell me does anybody in head office make any sort of effort to present ex players with the option of taking up the whistle ? I think a fair percentage of ex 1st grade players would do a fair job at refereeing

What do we all think ?
