Subject: Knights v Tigers - Sunday 10 June

I'm currently watching the Knights v Tigers game on TV and the 1st penalty of the match was awarded as follows -

Knights have an attacking move that breaks down 5 meters out from the Tigers goal line.

The Touch Judge on the near side (I think its Jeff Younis) calls Sean Hampstead and reports Tigers player Jason Mooney for an incident that happened a few tackels earlier where Mooney had pulled back a Knights player by the jumper who was not in possession of the ball.

The penalty was technically warranted (although I'd argue dragging the play all the way back in this manner was a case of double dipping rather than playing a good advantage) however WHERE the penalty was awarded was the bigger issue. The spot where the penalty was awarded was disgraceful.

The reply on TV suggests the incident occurred 35 metres out from the Tigers line , maybe 5 metres in from touch.

After the report Hampstead asks the touch judge "Is this where it happened" and is told yes.

The penalty is then awarded about 22 metres out from the Tigers line , about 5 metres in from touch.

Thats a mistake of about 13 metres ! Not even remotely close !

I remember when I was a touchy in games one of the big issues that was drilled into us repeatedly if we wanted to break play was to make it a priority to get the marking of the incident correct. Clearly the touchy in this incident hasn't done this and just made a random guess ... OOPS !

With footy fields these days being marked in increments of 10 meteres as well as each incremnent also having a big number painted on the ground its just unbelievable that a touchy could get the pin pointing of an incident this wrong.

My question - Would not the video referee have supplied some input to the on field officials especially since the chat (which took a minute or so to organise) between touchy, referee and offending player also took place about 13 metrers away from where the offence really took place ?

Michael Stone - Your Thoughts ?
