The grip you describe was dubbed the "Mork from Ork grip" down in Canberra, and was used by a couple of referees with good effect (Innes McDougall and Brian Cobb spring to mind)

I hold the whistle between thumb and index finger, with the thumb changing position over the outlet hole to get some of the tonal variety. Breath control, and use of the tongue to chop the blast, are also important parts of technique.

Aprt from myself (naturally) some of the best whistleblowers down there were John Ellis, Glynn Jones and Scott Hall.

Boiling the whistle, like and egg for 3 minutes - helps initially andl also ever few weeks to clear out the throat of the whistle and is good for hygiene reasons.

In cold areas, wrapping the tip of the whistle in electrical tape provides a more comfortable whistle.

A good drill is to go for a run in your suburb and stop in front of the house of everyone you don't get on with and give the whistle a good blast: not only do you get whistle practice, your sprinting improves!
