As I have said before, I *****WILL***** *****NOT***** use the ideas of other writers. That means no 'X-Men', no 'saiya-jins', and no 'Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professer Poopypants'. It's called professional courtesy, and besides which, all that stuff is copyrighted, so I couldn't use if even if I would or if I wanted to. If the subject of anyone being a superhero clone, or a composite fo many, or even if there is something from a book or movie or tv show or anything, I will kill the character in a truly hideous manner, and no, I'm not bluffing. Don't believe me? Go on. Try me. I dare you.
Now, if I hear any compliants about this, I will go back and rewrite the whole goddamn thing, using only Venric, Darrev, and Erin, since they are the only ones essential to the plot anyway. I would really prefer not having to do that, however, since I like what I have so far and it would be a huge pain in the ass to rewrite it. I'm sorry for being so harsh, but it gets old fast when you have said a number of times that the story is going to be original and a number of people seem intent on not only making another crappy fanfic, but telling you how to write it as well. I realize that nobody here has done that, but that's how it feels to me. I have tried to make everyone happy, but now I realize that I can't do that while staying satisfied with it myself, so I'm going to write the rest my own way. No complaints about this either. And one more thing; I will not add any other new characters to the story other than Phoenix.
Finally, if I want a reaction to the story, I will ask your opinions on it. This does not mean I want you to tell me how to write it or how I should change it or what you think should happen next, it means I want to know what you think of it so far. NOTHING ELSE.
If anyone does not understand something I have said, let me know, and I will explain. If you have questions about how the next part of the story is coming and how close I am to posting it, go ahead and ask. Other than that, I don't want to hear it. Are we all clear on this? I really hope so.

Okay, I've been pretty busy, what with the studying for my GED, my job, and everything else.
Anyway, I've got the 'official' stuff on the characters in my story (i.e. exactly what all the characters are capable of, thier history, and vital stats). Second, I've got the next twenty to thirty pages planned out, but I don't know what's going to happen after that (I'll probably finish up the story pretty soon once I've got everyting I have planned right now down on paper).
Anyway, I'll try to get it done in the next couple of months, but I can't make any absolute promises.

GUESS WHAT! The funniest catastrophe happened to me on Friday y'see. I was blundering about on the internet as per usual on the Judge Jules message board when I found myself unable to post new messages. Turns out that somebody who was randomly typing passwords into other people's names amazingly managed to find my eight-lettered, unique password and for some reason the ghastly bastard has gone and changed my JJ board password, my Hotmail password, my MSN password...great fun, eh? Now I'm having a right old shit time trying to change my MSN, it's great fun!
Erin, does the FF Gurus board still exist? I'm unable to use it as of late.

Okay, I know this is probably way overdue, and I apologize, but there's nothing that can be done now.
First of all; I *have* been working on the story, but it's mostly rewriting a lot of the stuff that I already have, and several scenes that take place later in the story.
Secondly; while I have been writing, I haven't been doing much of it, mostly because my life has just totally turned to crap in the past month or so, and I have a lot of stuff I need to sort out.
Finally; I'm not going to post any more of the story until I finish it. Mainly because the writing and rewriting of everything takes so long.

I found this the other day and thought you guys might like it.
Arsehole- This one is long but well worth reading! In case your frustration level rises today, this is for everyone who occasionally has a really bad day when you just need to take it out on someone: I was sitting at my desk when I remembered a telephone call that I had to make. I found the number and dialed it. A man answered nicely saying, "Hello?"
I politely said, "This is Patrick Hanifin and may I please speak to Robin Carter?"
Suddenly the phone was slammed down on me! I couldn't believe that anyone could be that rude. I tracked down Robin's correct number and called her. She had transposed the last two digits. After I hung up with Robin, I spotted the wrong number still lying on my desk. I decided to call it again. When the same person once more answered, I yelled, "You're a arsehole!" and hung up. Next to his phone number I wrote the word "arsehole" and put it in my desk drawer. Every couple of weeks when I was paying bills or had a really bad day, I'd call him up. He would answer and I'd yell, "You're a arsehole!" It always cheered me up. Later in the year the phone company introduced caller ID. This was a real disappointment for me. I would have to stop calling the arsehole. Then one day I had an idea. I dialed his number and heard his voice. "Hello?"
I made up a name. "Hi. This is the sales office of the telephone company and I'm just calling to see if you're familiar with our new caller ID program."
He answered, "No!" and I slammed down the receiver. I quickly called him back and said, "That's because you're a arsehole!" The reason I'm taking the time to tell you this story is to show you how if there's ever anything bothering you, you can do something about it. Just dial XXX-XXXX. (Keep reading, it gets better.) One day an old lady at the mall was really taking her time pulling out of her parking space. I didn't think she was ever going to leave. Finally, her car began to move ever so slowly and she began backing out. I backed up a little more to give her plenty of room. Great, I thought, she's finally leaving. All of a sudden this black Camero came flying up the parking aisle in the wrong direction and pulled into her space. I started honking my horn and yelling,
"You can't do that, buddy! I was here first!"
The guy got out of his Camero completely ignoring me. He walked toward the mall as if he didn't even hear me. I thought to myself, this guy is a arsehole. There sure are a lot of arseholes in this world. I noticed he had a "For Sale" sign in the back window of his car. I wrote down the number.
Then I hunted for another place to park.
The next day I was at home sitting at my desk. I had just gotten off thephone after calling XXX-XXXX and yelling,
"You're a arsehole!"
(It's really easy to call him now since I have his number on speed dial.)
Then I noticed the phone number of the guy with the black Camaro and decided to call him too. After a couple of rings someone answered the phone.
I asked, "Are you the man with the black Camaro for sale?"
"Yes."
"Can you tell me where I can see it?"
"Yes, I live at 1802 West 34th Street. It's a yellow house and the car is parked right out front."
I asked, "What's your name?"
"My name is Don Hansen."
"When's a good time to catch you, Don?"
"I'm home in the evenings."
"Listen, Don, can I tell you something?"
"Sure."
"Don, you're a arsehole!" And I slammed the phone down.
After I hung up I added Don's number to my speed dialer. Now I had two arseholes to call whenever I had a bad day.
However this wasn't as much fun as it used to be. So I thought about it and came up with a solution.
First, I had my phone dial arsehole#1. The mananswered nicely and I yelled,"You're a arsehole!" But I didn't hang up.
The arsehole said, "Are you still there?"
I said, "Yeah."
He said, "Stop calling me."
I said, "No!"
He said, "What's your name, pal?"
I said, "Don Hansen."
He said, "Where do you live?"
"1802 West 34th Street. It's a yellow house and my black Camaro is parked out front."
"I'm coming over right now, Don. You'd better start saying your prayers."
"Yeah, like I'm really scared, Arsehole!" And I hung up.
Then I called Arsehole #2. He answered,
"Hello."
I said, "Hello, arsehole!"
He said, "If I ever find out who you are..."
"You'll what?"
"I'll kick your butt."
"Well, here's your chance. I'm coming over right now, arsehole!" And I hung up. Then I picked up the phone and called the police. I told them I was at 1802 West 34th Street and that I was going to kill my gay lover as soon as he got home. Another quick call to Channel 13 news about the gang war going down on West 34th Street. After that I climbed into my car and headed over to 34th Street to watch the whole thing. Glorious! I watched two arseholes kicking the crap out of each other in front of 6 squad cars and a police helicopter I also taped it off the evening news!

This first part is just for Alia. Everyone else can skip down to the asterisks.
Because of the way I have your character set up for the rest of the story, I won't be able to work in her having a tail. I may be able to do it when I revise it, but I can't make any promises. If I were to give your character a monkey tail and keep it so that she's a martial artist, it would be painfully obvious to anyone who is familiar with DBZ that your character was influenced by it, so if I do make it so that your character has a tail, it will not be a monkey tail, and she won't be a martial artist. Personally, I don't like the martial arts thing at all because it doesn't really fit in with the European medieval setting, and I would really prefer that she have some other sort of vocation. I would appreciate knowing what you think.

I dislike the last part I wrote because I can't come up with a good explanation for the time warp, it doesn't fit in with the rest of the story, and on top of that, I just don't like the way it's written, so I'm going to go back and rewrite it. I'm getting somewhat burnt out on both the story and the characters, so I'm going to take a break from working on this story once I finish rewriting the last section, maybe two weeks or so.

I haven't been writing from where I left off, but I have been writing. I have two different endings written, one of which depends almost enitrely on a subplot that I may or may not introduce later, and is kind of sad. The other is a lot closer ot being a happy ending, but both are written in a way that leaves absolutly no place for a sequel. Unfortunatly, it's not very likely that I'll have the next part written by Satrday as I had originally intended for it to be, and I'm not sure when I'll get it done, so it may be a while.

Erin managed to finish the translation the next day. The first few lines were some sort of prophecy:
'An arcanium
shall receive from one
who is older, yet younger
the wisdom of the ages
for the good of many.'
"Does anybody know what this means?" I asked.
"Well, 'an arcanium' means a wizard." Alia said. "It's what we call them on Oerth."
"Do you know what the rest means?" Darrev asked.
She shook her head. "Not a clue."
"You said it was some sort of summoning spell before." I said to Erin. "Were you able to understand it?"
She shook her head. "A few parts, but most of it was beyond me. Even if I could've understood it, it wouldn't matter, since the last line is still missing."
"Could you fill in the last line if you could understand it?" Alia asked.
She shrugged. "Maybe. It depends on how powerful it is."
"How much do you understand? Half? A quarter?" I asked.
"About a quarter. I would need a lot more practice with my magic before I could understand it all."
"Can't wizards cast spells from scrolls?"
"We can, but since I don't know exactly what it does, it would be too dangerous to try it."
"Okay. Let's take these scrolls back to the organization and see what the wizards there think." I glanced out the window. "We still have about six hours of daylight left. We should probably make the most of it."
We gathered our things, restocked our food supply from the pantry, and left. This hadn't been much of an assignment, but at least it wasn't life threatening.
As we began out the front door, Erin suddenly stopped.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"There's some sort of force field here." She said.
I reached over and felt the air in front of her. "There's nothing here."
"It's there for me."
I thought for a moment. "Give me the scrolls."
She took off her backpack and gave me the scrolls rolled up inside. Holding the scrolls in one hand, I reached out again with the other. This time I felt the force field she had mentioned.
"Try it now." I said to her.
She stepped forward and through the field. "Looks like the scrolls can't leave the castle." She said.
"Yeah."
"So what do we do about it?" Alia asked.
I sighed. "We'll have to leave them here. The wizards back at the organization will have to come here themselves."
"They aren't going to be happy about that." Darrev said.
"Do you have any better ideas?" I asked.
He shook his head. "No."
"Okay then." I took the scrolls back inside and hid them under a rug in one of the bedrooms. It wasn't likely that anybody would come here, but there was no point in taking unnecessary risks.
I repositioned the rug and headed downstairs. I didn't notice how the sky had suddenly darkened until I was outside. I glanced up at the sky, noticing it was now full of dark, ominous-looking clouds.
I shrugged and started across the drawbridge. My partners were nowhere in sight. Fearing the worst, I hurried across the drawbridge and looked for tracks. Oddly enough, I found none. It was as though nobody had passed this way in years.
Wondering what was going on, I turned and went back into the castle, noting as I crossed it that the drawbridge was much less study than it had been when I had crossed it with the others just a few minutes ago. It was as though it had aged years in just moments.
I approached the large double doors to the castle, noting how they too, had aged. As I pushed one open, it let out a loud creak and fell off the hinges, falling forward and landing with a loud thud and a cloud of dust.
I waited a moment for the dust to settle down, then stepped over the fallen door, my hand on my sword. I glanced around, checking to see if anything was waiting in the dark for a feast of human entrails.
The interior was more or less the same, save for the much thicker layer of dust on everything. It was heavy enough to obscure the black and white checker pattern of the tiled floor. I started across the hall toward the stairs, kicking up a cloud of dust with every step.
The stairs' wooden railing fell apart as I touched it, falling off the side of the stairway and shattering on the dust covered floor below. Ignoring the railing, I continued up the stairs, going back into the bedroom I had hidden the scrolls in. The edge of the rug came off in my hand as I tried to lift it. Grabbing the middle of the rug, I lifted it off the floor and threw it against the wall, where it emitted a cloud of dust and fell to the floor in a heap of rotting hemp.
The scrolls were not under the rug. I cursed out loud and straightened, wondering once again just what in the Nine Hells had happened.
I decided that I had better check to see if there was anything salvageable left in the entire castle. As I left the room, there was a sudden flash of light. Before me, hovering a few inches above the floor, was an indistinct white figure.
The apparition let out a low moan and began to take shape. Four tendrils formed from the mass and took on the semblance of arms and legs, while a spherical mass moved to the top and positioned itself where a head would be. As I watched, the mass began to take on greater definition, becoming recognizably human.
It was a man in the latter years of life. He had a full beard and mustache, and was wearing the robes of a cleric. He reached out for me, his face wearing an expression of pain. I allowed the spectral hand to touch me, the sprit was obviously not malevolent.
His hand touched my forearm. I felt a coolness that passed through my entire arm as his hand did, chilling the muscles. The ghost turned and floated down the hallway, stopping at the end and turning to face me.
I glanced around, thinking that this might just be an illusion from some prankish wizard. I saw nobody, but I knew that that didn't mean anything. Wizard could project illusions from miles away.
I sighed and started toward the ghost, who was waiting patiently for me. As I neared him, he turned and floated down the stairs. I followed him to the front room and down a hallway. He stopped in front of the door at the end of the hall and floated through it.
I opened the door, or at leas t I attempted to. The door fell forward in a cloud of dust the same way the fist one had. I stepped over the fallen door and looked around the room. This was the room I had found the scrap with the ancient elven script on it.
The room was now empty except for a large block of what appeared to be ice. Entombed within the block of ice was a boy of about thirteen. He was wearing robes like the one the ghost had been wearing, and had dark red hair. Clenched in his left hand was a rolled up scroll. Engraved upon the surface of the ice was a single word: IMMOTION
I tapped the ice. It was solid all the way through, but not at all cold. I reached down and drew my dagger from the scabbard inside my boot and tapped at the ice with it. The ice fell away and melted, leaving nothing behind, not even a puddle of water.
"Interesting." I said to myself. I began chipping away at the ice again, this time around the engraved word. My intention was to get the scroll from the boys hand, but the name might mean something, and I didn't want to destroy it.
Several hours and joint pains later, I finally broke the engraved word apart from the rest of the mass and removed it. Unlike the other pieces of ice I had removed, the ice with the engraved word didn't melt. Instead, the rest of the ice began to melt. It stated slowly, but quickly accelerated. The boy in the melting block of ice slumped forward as the ice around his waist melted, and dropped to the ground as the rest melted seconds later. I was sure he was dead until he tried to roll over onto his back.
I hurried over to him and helped him sit up. He was breathing heavily, and seemed exhausted.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
He looked up sharply as I spoke. "You speak the holy tongue?"
"What? No, I don't know about any holy tongue."
"You are speaking it now!" He insisted angrily, attempting to stand. His knees buckled and he sat down again.
"We should probably introduce ourselves. You are?"
"I am Cedric, cleric of Immotion. And you are?"
"I'm Venric."
He gave me an odd look. "You cannot be Venric. It is against the doctrine of the church for anyone to name their child that."
"What? What are you talking about?"
"It is against doctrine for parents to name their child Venric. Everybody knows that. It has been that way since Venric and his allies saved the world from the demons two thousand years ago."
"What!?"
"Do you not know the holy scriptures?"
"No, I don't. Who's Immotion?"
"Immotion is the goddess of purity, good, and fire."
"So what were you doing in that block of ice?"
He opened his mouth to speak, but didn't say anything. He frowned and thought for a few minutes, staring at the floor, then looked up at me and shook his head. "I do not know."
"What's the last thing you remember?"
He thought for a moment. "Nothing. I remember nothing."
"Nothing? You know about your deity."
"But I remember nothing else."
"Damn." I helped him to his feet. "Well, come on. Let's get you something to eat and I'll tell you what I know."

LIke it says at the beginning of part seven, Phoenix will be renamed Cedric. Instead of being a fire wizard, he will be a cleric of a fire god, and in case you don't know, a cleric is like a priest, but they aren't quite so preachy. As intended originally, he will be about thirteen or fourteen. Hiro will show up again a few times, but it will be a while before he does (maybe part fifteen). A rough guess about the whole thing is maybe thirty parts, but it may be shorter or longer depending on how well I write it and if I come up with any more really good ideas that I like. Anyway, I'll try to have part eight by next Saturday (not the one coming up), but I can't make any promises. It depends mostly on what kind of mood I'm in. And finally, yes, I still intend to have a number of characters die, but who and when I'm still not going to let you know. You'll just have to wait and find out. And yes, I know I'm a bastard like that. Next, the post entitled 'EVERYBODY needs to read this' was written when I was kinda pissed off, but what I said about using other writers' ideas still stands. If you have any ORIGINAL ideas, I'm not entirely closed to them, but I won't make any promises.

I woke as she began to stir. I was momentarily confused by the warm presence at my side, until I remembered the events of the night before.
I glanced down at her. "Good morning."
"Oh, good morning." She sat up, letting go of my hand.
I sat up next to her. "Erin, last night…"
"No… I… I don't want to talk about it right now. Maybe later."
I sighed mentally. "Alright. We'll talk about it later."
I stood and held out may hand to help her up. She took it and I helped her to her feet.
She stared down at our hands for a second, then let go suddenly. "Venric, I think I need some time alone." She didn't look at me.
"Okay. I'll see you in a little while then."
She nodded, eyes still downcast, and sat down again. I left her room, closing the door behind me, and went downstairs to see if there was anything edible in the pantry.
As I came downstairs, I noticed that the rain had stopped, though the cloudcover hadn't let up. "Looks like we're in for more rain." I said to myself.
I came to the bottom of the stairs and entered the doorway on the east, which, as I had guessed, led to the pantry. After a little searching, I found some dried meat and nuts. Darrev and Alia came downstairs after a bit. We finished eating after a while, and Erin hadn't come down yet.
"Let's wake up Erin and start looking around." Darrev said.
"I saw her before you two got up. I'm… not sure she's feeling well." I said.
"Oh. Well then, let's get started. I'll take the basement, you take the top floor, and Alia, you take the ground floor."
"Okay."
"Fine with me."
Darrev and Alia left, leaving me alone again. I sighed to myself and started upstairs.
I went to my room and began checking the walls, floor, and ceiling for anything unusual. Ultimately I found nothing.
I left the room and started across the hall one of the other bedrooms. As I reached for the doorknob, Erins' door opened and she stepped out.
"Oh, Venric." She said, closing the door and leaning up against it. "I wanted to talk to you."
I turned to face her. "Okay."
She avoided my eyes. "…I've been thinking about it, and I'm not really sure I… feel that way about you." She glanced at me, and looked away again.
"That's kinda what I figured. Hero worship."
"Yeah…" She glanced at me again. "Hero worship…"
There was an awkward moment of silence between us. Eventually I broke it.
"Well, Darrev and Alia are checking around for anything unusual, like secret doors… Um… I was… checking around up here… You… should probably get something to eat."
"Okay." She said quietly, starting for the stairs.
We regrouped in the pantry that evening.
"Anybody find anything?" I asked.
"Nothing unusual." Alia said.
"I found these scrolls." Darrev said, setting them on the table and unrolling them. They appeared to be some sort of journal or diary. It was written in a strange language, one that I recognized but couldn't immediately place.
"Can anybody read it?" I asked.
"A few words." Darrev said. "Seems to be some sort of ancient script, but I only recognize a few letters."
"I can make out a bit" Erin said.
"Really? What's it say?" Alia asked.
She read over the scrolls for a few minutes. "I'm not really sure, but it looks like directions for casting some sort of spell."
"Hm. So can you tell what kind of spell?"
"Not really, but from the context, I'd guess it's some sort of summoning spell. If it is a spell, the last line is missing."
I looked at the scrolls again. There was definitely something familiar about those letters.
"Okay," I said. "tomorrow, you two see if you can translate it. Alia and I will look around some more and see if we can find anything else that might be significant."
"These runes seem awfully familiar." Darrev said, looking at the scrolls again.
"I know. I was just thinking the same thing."
"Well, I think we should get some rest right now." Alia said. "We'll start in the morning."
"Yeah. Let's get some rest."
The next day I woke early. I sat up and stretched, feeling the vertebrae in my neck and back pop. I hadn't slept well, and my back hurt from laying on the stone floor for eight hours.
I got up, ignoring the pain in my back, and got dressed. I fastened my sword to my belt and left the room, smoothing my hair with my fingers.
I went downstairs to the pantry, getting some dried meat and nuts for my breakfast. I noticed that there were the same amounts that there had been the day before. Apparently the pantry restocked itself magically every day.
I finished eating and began looking around the main floor, searching for anything that looked out of place.
The others came one by one after a while. Darrev and Erin began working together on translating the scrolls, taking notes on some blank sheets of parchment they had found. Alia joined me in looking around for anything unusual.
My mind kept wandering back to the scrolls as I looked around the halls and rooms. I knew I had seen those runes before. I began replaying my entire life in my mind, trying to remember where, but with no success.
The rest of the day passed uneventfully. Erin and Darrev had only gotten part of one scroll translated.
"At this rate, it'll take months." Erin said, leaning back in her chair and rubbing her eyes.
"If I could just remember where I've seen these letters before…" Darrev said.
"I've been trying to do that all day." I sat down at the table and took a drink of the wine we had found earlier.
"Maybe two of us should take these scrolls back, while the other two stay here and keep looking around." Alia said.
I leaned back in my chair and stretched. It had been a long day. "Yeah, we should probably take these back and see what the wizards back there have to say." I finished my glass of wine. "But we should all go. If just two of us go, it's a lot more likely they won't be ready if they get attacked on the way back."
"Yeah, you're right."
"Let's stay one more day and see if we can find anything else." Erin shrugged. "Maybe we'll get lucky."
"Yeah, maybe." Darrev said.
"Damn it's depressing here." Darrev said the next day at breakfast.
"Yeah, I know, but we'll be leaving tomorrow." I said.
He grunted. "Yeah."
.He stood and left, leaving me alone. Erin was in her room, studying the scrolls, and Alia was already looking around. I leaned back and stared at the ceiling.
"Damn. I hate this place." I said out loud before I caught myself. Talking to myself was only something I did when I was stressed. I really needed to take some time off.
I sighed aloud and stood. I left the pantry and began looking around.
Eventually I came to a small room at the end of a hallway on the first floor. It held a broken, dust covered chair, and a few wooden boxes. I began checking the walls for anything unusual.
I searched for nearly half an hour, checking every brick, until I eventually found one that was loose. I hooked my fingernails into the crack around the brick and worked it out of the wall. I dropped it to the floor and looked into the hole where it had been. I removed a scrap of paper and unfolded it. There were a few words written in the same language as the scrolls Darrev had found, and below it were a few words in elvish, which I had passing familiarity with. I could make out parts of words, but I wasn't able to translate enough to make any sense. Erin seemed to know elven. I would give it to her later.
We regrouped again that evening. Alia hadn't found anything. Darrev and Erin had managed to get more of the scrolls translated, but they still hadn't finished with thew first one.
"It would be a lot easier if part of it were already translated." Darrev said, sitting down at the table.
"That reminds me, I found this earlier today." I said, taking the scrap of paper from my shirt pocket and handing it to Erin.
She looked over it for a few minutes. "These are the same letters on the scrolls. And this," She pointed to the elven runes. "Is ancient Elven."
"Can you read it?" Alia asked.
"Yeah, but not well. It's like a different dialect. I'll probably have to take a few liberties in the translation."
"So you'll be able to translate the entire thing?" I asked.
"Should be able to."
"Any idea how long it'll take?" Alia asked.
"Should go a lot faster now. Maybe a few days."
"So do we want to stay here, or are we going to go back and see what the wizards have to say?" I inquired.

I only have a general idea of how much I've already posted, so here are the last few parts and most of what I've written but haven't posted. Anyway, in case you don't remember what's going on, it's right after Alia recovers and Venric takes her to meet Darrev and Erin.
I led her back to the inn we had been staying at. Darrev was in the front room, working on a flagon of ale. He looked up as we entered.
"You Alia?"
"Yeah, me Alia. Who you?"
"Darrev. His partner." He indicated me.
"Oh." She turned to me. "You said 'partners' before. I take it there's another somewhere?"
"Yeah, Erin." I looked at Darrev. "Where is she?"
"Went out for a while. Said she had something she needed to pick up."
"Oh." Alia and I went over to the table he was at and sat down. "Did she say when she'd be back?"
"No, but she said it wouldn't take long."
The front door opened and closed. I glanced over my shoulder and saw Erin. She was carrying a quarterstaff that had some sort of metallic inlay. After a moment, I realized it was copper. I made a mental note to ask about it later.
She sat down at our table. "You must be Alia." She said to the halfling.
"Yeah, and you must be Erin."
"Since Hiro took off, Alia's stuck here. She needs a job." I explained to Erin.
"Oh."
"I think she means a job like ours." Darrev put in.
"Yeah, I know who you are." Alia said, looking at him. "You're Darrev, the clown hater. And I know about the organization and your partner here too." She glanced at Erin. "I'm sorry, but I don't remember hearing anything about a half-elf wizard. Anyway, I'm a member of the organization back on Oerth, so it shouldn't be too much trouble getting me set up here."
"Wait a second!" Darrev exclaimed, slamming his fist down on the table, making the glasses rattle. "How do all these stories keep getting out about us?"
"Good question." I leaned back in my chair. "You see, most people don't know that the clowns are evil. So when one turns up dead for no apparent reason, stories start circulating and people get things penned on them, whether they had anything to do with it or not." I turned to Alia. "What have you heard about us?"
She thought for a moment. "I heard that you guys blew up an entire circus once, at night, when nobody other than the clowns were there."
I shook my head. "I heard that one too, but that was someone else. None of us has the power to do that." I glanced at Erin. "Yet."
"So we have a reputation that's not only bad, it's mostly undeserved." Darrev said sourly.
"Yeah."
"So, what do you say, will you help me get set up with the organization here?" Alia interjected.
I glanced at my partners, who just shrugged. I noticed that I was becoming the unofficial leader of this mission. "It's not really our call. Besides which, we don't know what sort of skills you have."
"I can fight."
"Everybody can fight. We don't know if you're any good at it though."
"Okay, let's fight." She said, hopping down from the chair.
"What?"
"You and me. Let's fight. I'll show you what I can do."
"Uh, no that's okay. I'm sure we could find a place for you."
"Okay." She said. " But I'll need a few days rest before I'm back at full strength."
I glanced at my partners. "I don't have any problems with staying here for a few days. Do you?"
Darrev shook his head. "No."
"I don't have any problems." Erin said.
"Good." Alia said. She glanced at me. "Um, not that it's any of my business, but is there something wrong with your arm?"
"I got hit on the shoulder a few days ago, while we were distracting the clowns so Hiro could get in and find you."
"Oh, well don't you think you should get it looked at?"
"Yeah, I probably should." I stood up. "I'm going to see the midwife. I'll be back in a while."
"Okay. See you later." Erin said.
I left the midwifes' hut an hour later, my shoulder feeling fine, and headed back to the inn. Darrev and Erin were sitting at a table in the front room. He was drinking, and she was studying her spellbook. I headed over and pulled up a chair. "Where's Alia?"
"Back in the room." Erin said without looking up. "Said she needed sleep."
"Ah."
"So what are we supposed to do about Alia?" Darrev asked.
"We're going to take her back to the organization ."
"Is that a good idea?" Erin asked.
"Well, she already knows about it, so I don't see how it could hurt."
"Yeah, I guess you're right."
Darrev finished his ale and set the tankard on the table. "We'll head to the nearest base and see what they have to say."
"You know where that is?" I asked.
He thought for a moment. "Ten minutes north-northeast of here."
"Okay. We'll go tomorrow."
As it turned out, Alia was already an agent of the organization on Oerth. After a little paperwork, it was decided that she would be working with the three of us on the next assignment.
We were to head north, into the mountains. There was supposed to be some sort of castle or stronghold there that had some sort of connection to the appearance of the clowns. We were told to go there and see what we could find.
We set out a few weeks later. It was getting to be late October, and the leaves on the trees had long since changed color and started falling off. As we walked through the woods, I noticed that nobody said much. The sky was almost perpetually overcast, and the short amounts of time that it did clear up, it was either late at night or toward dusk, and the clouds moved in again soon.
The cloudcover grew heavier with each passing day. I kept finding myself staring up at the sky, wondering when it would rain. From the dark gray color of the clouds, it was going to be nine hells of a storm when it finally let loose.
Ten days had passed, and still, nobody spoke except when necessary. I could only guess about the others, but being in the dying woods, with the perpetually overcast gray sky, was really bringing my spirits down.
We started on the road again early on the eleventh day. By my calculations, we would reach the castle sometime today. Somehow, the silence seemed appropriate to the situation. That was fine with me. Silence often said more than words ever could, in any language.
The tips of the castles' battlements appeared on the horizon toward dusk. Shortly afterward, it began to rain. It began with just a few drops, but it didn't take long for it to grow heavy enough to all but completely obscure almost any vision.
We were soaked long before we reached the front gate. Fortunately, the drawbridge was down and the portcullis was up, so we had no trouble getting in.
We passed the portcullis and entered into the main hall. It had a dust-covered black and white tile floor, and there was a large stairway near the back of the room.
There were three large windows in the walls, one on either side of the front door, and one on the west wall. Each one was in a niche in the wall, and had some sort of padding on the deep windowsill. The east wall was closer to the door than the west wall, and had a door that led to the dining area and kitchen.
On either side of the door were three torch-like objects, but instead of the customary pitch soaked rag on the end, there was some sort of gem or crystal. The crystal lit up as I reached for the handle of the torch. I removed it from its fastening to the wall and turned to the others. "We can look around tomorrow. Right now we should rest. Everyone take one of these." Despite my natural tendencies to stay away from the leader position, I found myself slipping into the mantle of a leader easily.
My partners each removed a torch from the wall. The crystals lit up as they touched them, and we started toward the large staircase at the back of the room.
The stairs led to a hall with several rooms on either side. The first six doors led to extravagant bedrooms, and the two beyond that were washrooms.
We each took a room for the night, Darrev and Alia on one side of the hall, while Erin and I took rooms next to each other on the other side of the hall.
I headed onto my room and took off my wet cloak, shirt, and hardened leather armor. I hung them in the closet, which held several regal, though dusty, outfits.
I drew my sword and dried it off on one of the outfits hanging in the closet. I leaned it up against the wall next to the closet, and removed the scabbard from my belt and leaned it next to the sword.
I slipped off my boots and lay down on the large bed in the center of the room, crossing my arms behind my head. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but I had trouble doing so. Eventually I surmised that it was because the bed was too soft, lay on the floor, and was asleep in minutes.
I awoke a short time later to the sound of a door opening and closing. I had learned, out of necessity, how to sleep lightly in an unfamiliar or unsafe place. I silently got up and grabbed my sword. Not drawing it yet, I moved to the door and placed my ear against it.
I heard footsteps pass my door, quick and light. I guessed that the person was either a small human or an elf, as the steps were too light for a dwarf, and too far apart to be a halfling or gnome.
I cracked the door open and looked down the hall. I couldn't see anyone, but I could hear the person going down the stairs. From the pace, they were either carrying something heavy, or they were unconcerned about being discovered. As I noted before, the footfalls were light, so I decided it must be the latter.
I darted back to the closet and slipped on my shirt. It would take too long to get into my armor, and it was easier to be quiet when I wasn't wearing my boots.
I left the room and followed the person down the stairs. I couldn't hear anything, and for a second I was afraid I had lost them. My apprehensions were put to rest when I saw Erin sitting on the windowsill, staring out at the rain.
"What's on your mind?" I asked as I neared her.
She glanced at me, then looked back out the window and sighed. "I don't know. I just feel bad."
"What do you mean? Bad how?"
She sighed. "I just feel…." She paused for a moment, then shook her head. "It's hard to explain."
"Depressed?" I asked, sitting down next to her.
She sighed again, and nodded slightly. "Yeah, I guess so."
"It's just the environment we've been in recently. You'll feel better when we leave."
She nodded again, still staring out the window. I started to get up to leave, when I noticed she still had her wet dress on.
"You should really get changed into something dry. Before you get sick."
She glanced down at her dress, and sighed again. "Yeah, I guess you're right."
She stood up, and we walked upstairs together. I walked with her to her room, and she motioned for me to come in. She sat down on the bed and looked up at me, her eyes reflecting the pale light given off by the torch on the wall. There was something odd about her, almost a tangible aura of ethereal sadness surrounding her being.
"Venric, come sit with me."
I sat next to her on the bed and took her hand in mine, noticing how cold she was. "Cheer up."
She sighed again and stared at the floor. "I'm sorry. I just don't know what to do. I've never felt like this before."
"Don't be sorry. You can't help feeling like this. It's just that the rain and being in this deserted old castle has affected you. A lot of people would feel depressed too."
"Mm." She continued staring at the floor.
"Erin, I know what it's like to feel like that. I used to be the same way. We're probably going to be here for a while, so you can't let it get to you."
"I'm sorry…" She began, but I cut her off.
"Don't be, it's not your fault."
"I know, I know, it's just…" She trailed off and sighed silently.
After a few minutes, she looked up at me. "Venric…"
"Yes?"
"Venric… just…hold me."
I had been half expecting this. I put my arms around her shoulders, and she wrapped her arms around my chest. She squeezed me close to her, burying her face in the crook of my shoulder. We held each other like that for a while, until I realized she was crying. I could feel her tears soaking through my shirt. I rubbed her shoulder through her still damp robe. "Erin, relax. It'll be alright."
She continued crying quietly. I kept talking to her in a low voice, trying to calm her down. We sat there for what seemed like a long time.
Eventually she calmed down and stopped crying. We sat there for a while longer, neither one of us saying anything. Eventually she let go and pulled back. There was a damp spot on my shirt from her tears.
"You okay now?" I asked.
She nodded. "Yes, thank you." She wiped at her face with her hands. "You're a really good friend." She dropped her hands in her lap.
"I understand. Sometimes you just need a shoulder to cry on." I said. "If you need anything, you come see me, okay?"
I stood up to leave, but she grabbed my hand. "Venric, please, don't go just yet."
I sat down again. She relaxed her grip, but still kept her hand on mine. She lowered her eyes to the floor and took a deep breath.
"Venric…" She began hesitantly. "I… I don't know what this is… but I think it's…"
"I think I know what you mean." I said.
She looked up at me again, and squeezed my hand. "Venric…" There was something odd about her eyes, though it was hard to tell in the pale light.
"I know."
She moved closer to me. "Venric, please, don't… reject me."
I put my arm around her shoulders again. She took my right hand in her own and leaned her head against my shoulder. We just sat there, my arms around her, her head on my shoulder, hand in hand.
After a while, she looked up at me again. This time I realized what was different about her eyes. They were violet.
"Your eyes…"
She pulled back slightly, and let go of me. "What? What about them?"
"They're violet."
"That's strange. They've always been brown before."
"Maybe because… the way you feel."
"I don't know. Maybe."
We sat there for a while longer. Eventually I looked down at her. "Erin, we should get some rest."
"Please, just a while longer… I feel warm… safe."
"Alright…"
We sat there, not saying anything. After what seemed like a long time, I looked down at her again. She was breathing deeply and steadily, and her grip on my hand had grown loose.
"Erin?" I asked quietly. No response.
I sighed silently to myself. Now I knew why she had asked me about my past and insisted on bandaging my shoulder. I had tended to think of her as sort of a little sister in the three short months we had known each other, but it had never occurred to me that she felt this way about me.
I sighed silently. I was glad she trusted me enough to fall asleep in my arms, but my back was starting to hurt from the position I was in. Slowly, so as not to wake her, I leaned back until I was laying flat on the bed, her head still on my shoulder, and her hand still in mine.
Eventually I allowed myself to be lulled to sleep by the constant drumming of rain on the roof and the steady rhythm of her breathing.
