“Your compassion is reflected in the docility of this animal,” commented Lenariah. “You must be a very patient lord, indeed-you are willing to care for such creatures with kindness, and now you are putting up with me.”

She saw a smile, this time genuine, sneak across his face as she made the jest. She could not help but notice how his eyes lit up as he grinned. It was impossible to imagine that this man, still relatively young, had been so close to death just a few hours ago. The enchantress continued brushing the mare, though she was quite cautious in her movements. She attempted to copy the natural, smooth rhythm of her teacher, and yet she had the feeling that she would never be able to achieve such peace.

After developing some level of comfort with the animal, Lenariah pat its back. It seemed like an awkward gesture, and most likely an unusual one, because the horse neighed and shook her hand off. The movement startled the enchantress, and her sudden squeal was met with a chortle from Tevion.

“It appears as though I am not well-suited to be a stable hand,” she laughed. “If only all the world was given your talent, there would be fewer people with sore feet and more on horseback.”
