Subject: Imitation In the Jacob Story

As Betsy has already noted, the Jacob and his decendents is full of mimetic doubles and rivalries. One clear example is between Jacob and his uncle Laban. Clearly both are coniving and clever. Of course, Jacob has already tricked his brother out of his birthright by the time he comes to live with Laban. But he does seem to increasingly imitate his uncle in his tendency to scheme for self gain. This is especially clear in the parallels between Laban's wedding trick (thereby getting Jacob to marry his less appealing elder daughter Leah as well as Rachel and getting a longer term of labor) and Jacob's breeding of the marked herd ( twisting his uncle's agreement to gain the most and best of the flock for himself). It is after this last scheme of Jacob, in which he closely imitates his uncle, that he becomes a threat to Laban and notices his uncle's attitude towards him has changed for the worse.
