Subject: A meditation on mimesis

Now it seems like (and I think this has been pointed out by Dr. Jackson before) we have only been focusing on the negatives of mimesis. Perhaps this is because it is like a a sore tooth or muscle: it might hurt to mess with with but you cant help but do it anyways. I think that we havent really examined or we havent felt comfortable accepting mimesis for the positives it can provide.

Yes there are dangerous mimetic rivalries and problematic models from which to acquire desire, yet what about the carefully scrutinized mimesis, or the rivalries in which the model supports the imitator in a non-conflicting way? It can be something as simple as self-development through a coach or a mentor, or the imitation of someone who excels to a much higher level than you. Maybe it is being a better friend because you know you have been a bad friend to someone who still gives you a great amount of care despite how you treat them. It can also be something of a much higher level. The imitation of someone great like Gandhi, or as we talked about, the imitation of Christ.

Ultimately I think the greatest tool for recognizing mimesis could be the ability to possibly imitate with discretion in order to not fall into mimetic rivalries gone wrong (that would be a great title for something like "when animals attack" by the way).

Just thought I'd help end the class with a positive note that could maybe spread through mimetic contagion
