Now, I don't know that many of you already know what I'm about to say, but I think that its important to the Star Wars discussion. The Sith, as many of you know, are the anti-Jedi Order that raise to prominence roughly a thousand years before any of us meet Anakin or Luke Skywalker. They operate on purely mimetic Hierarchy. The master trains and raises up the apprentice until they are as strong as the master. Once the High Sith Lord(the chieftain of the Siths) picks an apprentice, it is assumed that one day that apprentice will become so powerful that he raises his hand against his master and kills him. This is not the "there can only be one" mechanism that we see in THE HIGHLANDER, but is instead quite mimetic. It is the double-bind that Girard writes of in Things Hidden: the apprentice is encouraged and forced by his society to BE the master in all things, and when he is equal to his master his master finally pushes back (tries to kill him). The dark side operates on mimetic violence entirely. Think of what Vadar says to Luke: 'Join me, and we can kill the emperor and rule together' -> the apprentice rises up against his master, taking his place and becoming the master.
