I haven't yet read Wilde's "The Decay of Lying", but I don't find it surprising what he argues in it. I'm not sure if life REALLY imitates art, as I think that art is an expression of life and tends to put a mirror up to it. I think you make a great point when you mentioned that typical artistic trends tend to be "ahead" of the culture and seem to direct it. Again, I think it's a double bind situation where everything is interrelated but tries to distinguish itself. I also liked how you said that the relationship between the two was "imitative, but it is a shifting of style and subject". I think this plays into the Girardian idea of the subject exceeding its model and becoming the new model. I also find it interesting that the switch happens so easily and without a lot of violence or rejection. It's a different way to look at this exchange between subject and model.
