I used to think that Jazz was an entirely original art. Most that perform might even say so as well. But if you've ever had your Jazz playing critiqued by a Jazz musician, you know the famous line: "you need to be listening to more ****** " or "that was good, that was a lot like ******, is that who you've been listening too?" I'm not saying that Jazz improvisation is not original, I'm just saying that it's not quite original. Even Jazz is based on imitating the styles of other artists and the earlier Jazz players. They have set the standard. Of course, that is not to say that new standards are not set. Jazz has that built in double bind: you are told to on the one hand be creative, while on the other you are told to imitate.
